I am building a new gas rifle and am wanting to do it in 260 remington. Which barrel length would be the best? I am looking at the 20 in. and the 24 in. from DPMS as the money situation prevents getting one from places like Satern, Shilen, etc at this time. Any suggestions appreciated.

Re: Which Barrel Length?

There's some things you should be considering:

- How far will you be shooting?
- Where do you live?
- What will you be shooting?
- What will you be shooting at?
- Will you be handloading?
- What is the purpose of the rifle?

Do you want a handier rifle with slightly lower (maybe 100 fps) muzzle velocity, or a longer rifle with slightly higher muzzle velocity?

There's your issue. Me, I'd go 20" and be happy with the better handling. It'll still shoot to 1,000y with proper loads, if YOU can dope the conditions and your come-ups.

Re: Which Barrel Length?

500-600 yds. at the most probably. I am in the mtns. of western NC at about 3200 ft. elevation. It will be used mostly for targets and big game. And I will be reloading eventually. The main purpose I guess you could say is like alot on here would say. I want one...lol.

Re: Which Barrel Length?

Nate,
I was leaning towards the 20 in. barrel w/ the Miculek comp on the end. You helped me decied for sure w/ your points about and it's capability to still go the distance when the homework is done.
Thanks.

Re: Which Barrel Length?

I would second nate on the 20" barrel. It's what I've got on my Remmy, and it works fine. I'm a fan of the 139 Scenar. I live in Vancouver, BC, but I hunt in Alberta (similar elevation). You'll be fine with 20".

I vote for no comp or brake, especially in this chambering (.260) unless it's critical that you come back on target real fast -- like when the rabid skunks are coming at you in waves.

Comp/brake is just another cost, and one more thing to clean, and adds significantly to the noise output. If you shoot alone, that's not a big deal (the noise), but if you're around others, give 'em a break -- not a BRAKE.

Regardless, enjoy that rig when it's in your hands. You're buying it for the best reason of all -- because you want to.

America isn't about need. It's about WANT. If you WANT to stay a free nation, then NEVER forget that. You don't NEED a '67 Corvette big block. You don't NEED a Rolex, or a house with six bathrooms, or 600 thread count sheets, or blond highlights on your armpit hair. But we're a nation founded on liberty. The pursuit of happiness. Go pursue some.

Re: Which Barrel Length?

Very true Nate, very true. I guess I will go without the comp. That will save some bucks. And thanks to you too Canuck, and everyone else that gave their advice. A 20 in. Barrel w/o the comp it is.
