So I'm finishing up an SPR style build with a WOA 18" barrel, and I'm trying to wade through the sea of LPVO's out there to find which one I'd like to finish off my build with. My build is a .223 and I'd like to be able to use it for both closer range 3-gun style shooting as well as stretching out for longer 500 or 600 yard shoots. I'm looking to spend $600 or less ideally, but I'd be willing to stretch that a little if there are significantly better options. I'd be willing to buy new or used if it stretches my buying power. I've been looking at the Burris RT6, the Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6 and 1-8, the Athlon Midas BT4 1-6, and the Steiner P4Xi. Anything that I'm missing, or any clear winners in that price range? Thanks!

Of those listed I like the Burris. But honestly it sounds like you want a 3 gun rifle but you say SPR. For an SPR I think 10x or higher. (For shooting people) For a 3 gun rifle I think 8x or lower.

Your budget:

3gun: RT6
SPR: Used SWFA 3-15 FFP

I was very happy with my Midas 1-6. Hitting 2 moa sized steel out to 675Y was easily done, both holding over and dialing, the reticle is excellent. The build quality is good, the glass really good, and it's not very heavy.

The only fault, if you could call it that, is the illume isn't bright enough to show on a sunny day. Recently with another brands 1-8 I've been realizing that one doesn't need daylight bright illume anyway, it might have it's place sometimes but...

Cameraland has these on sale.

The RT-6 has gotten phenomenal reviews. Definitely the nicest scope at that price point, and an excellent 3 Gun optic seeing as that is what it was designed for.

But I do agree with the others about the SPR bit. You can get hits at 500 and 600 yards with a 6x, but they won't be as precise, more magnification would treat you better.. So it depends on what you're looking for. The 6x will do better double duty as a 3 Gun/DMR scope than the 2-10. Unless you go open class and put an offset red dot on the 2-10.

You all make a good point about looking at higher mags. Sounds like the Midas and the RT6 are my best options if I were to go 1-6. I have looked in to 2-10 or 2-12's at all, but it sounds like they're worth a look. What should I be looking at in that mag range?

My favorite carbine optic is the NF 2.5-10X24, with the mil-dot reticle. I run a T2 offset with it usually.

If you want a true 1-X, in your price range, I would seriously look at the SWFA 1-6 or even the 1-4. I think there is a 1-6 or two available in the PX. I just prefer more magnification generally, and don't find 2.5 a hinderance for close fast work.

Maybe prioritizing your requirements can help. I just went through this exercise myself for a LPV0. For example, this was my list in prioritized order:

1. Durability (308 recoil rated) with lifetime warranty.
2. Functional and adaptable reticle.
3. Great eye relief.
4. Good glass (well above budget class glass).
5. 1-8x magnification range
6. FFP
7. Daylight visible illumination
8. $800.00 to $1000.00 price range
9. Buy used or wait for great sale as higher-end offerings start at about $1300.00 and don't seem to have great resale values.

I did eventually find a match.
