Hey Guys,

So wondering what to do with trying to get a AR in .308. I got right around 2000.00-2300.00 to play with. Was looking at DPMS SSAS..? But what do you guys think. Can I (meaning have someone) build me one for that price? Really want quad rail on it. well basically the look of the SASS.

I just want to get my money worth. Was trying to find something used to save cash.

But I want to hear opioions from you guys....

Before this discussion goes too far down one path or another...

1) What do you want to do with any AR-10/LR-308 type rifle? Targets? Hunting? A little of both?

2) What kinds of ranges are you looking to be able to shoot?

3) Is your top dollar budget of $2300 inclusive of optics, mounts, mags, accessories, etc.?

Your answer to each of those questions will dictate what options would be best for you. With all that being said...there is nothing wrong with the DPMS SASS rifles, but for the money...you can do better.

For that kind of money, you are damn close to affording one of the best (GAP, APA, etc.) build you a rifle to your specs in terms of handguards, stocks, etc. and you know you'll be getting what you pay for.

Also...without going into all sorts of detail at this point...YES, the POF P-308 is a better rifle, albeit a different rifle, than the DPMS in my experience.

ORD..

I want to do a lot of target shooting with it. Though come Nov Im going to TX and plan on using it for a few hogs with it. SO little of both.

Looking realistically 0-500 for critters...paper little more if possible...but accurate to hunting for 500. Honestly though 500 is a good shot already. For me at this point.

The 2300 is preferred with optics etc since that is what i have to spend. accessories can be added later when more money is there.

Also, Why do yo feel POF is better. I have read so many different post and everyone opinion is different no matter what rifle it is. But trying to get broad subject matter here so I get the best for what i can afford.

Thanks so much

For your purposes and budget...I don't know that you need the POF. I prefer the POF because I shoot suppressed and the piston driven operating system, in my opinion, is a big improvement over DI guns for suppressed fire (short of a bolt gun or single shot). They run cleaner, cooler, and generally better in every respect. Also, my P-308 has been sub-MOA out of the box with good ammo and is approching 1/2MOA with my reloads. POF also offers the highest quality of components on their rifles and their customer service is excellent. Finally, POF is a great company to work with in general. There are several folks here that are affiliated with POF (not me...I'm just a happy user of their products) that are always willing to chime in to assist folks or offer their wisdom when needed. All of these things factor into my preference for the POF. If you run a search (see link below), you will find a bunch of good info on the POF, as well as numerous other 308 semi-auto platforms.

SH Google Search Engine

If you are sticking to a $2300 total budget, then anything custom, as well as the POF and many other "high-end" semis, are out of your price range. You can get the DPMS SASS new in box for around $1700 or so which gives you $600 for mounts/rings/optics. The SASS will serve your purposes well as long as you don't mind the weight/size in a hunting/hog rifle compared to lighter, shorter-barreled, less "accessorized" rifles.

POF P308 with a 16" bbl if 500 is what your planning. It will be compact and easy to carry. It will do everything that you ask of it and then some.

All you have to do is decide if you want All Black or two tone with Black/NP3 silver finish.
