Remington 700 LA 30-06 Lightweight Hunting Rifle Project w/ NX8 2.5-20X50

I say lightweight, but I'm not counting oz's. Just in general terms of my objective.

Have a set of NF Ultralight 4 screw .885" rings I was planning on using but open to suggestions.

Looking at:

Near Precision 40 MOA
Seekins 20 MOA
Farrell FG force 20 MOA

Looking at these three cause of the integral recoil lug.

Probably don't need a 20+ MOA rail for the application, but figure I'd just get it. Never know what this rifle might become down the road.

In the same vein probably worth it to re drill and tap for the #8 screws?

I have Nd still run Seekins, Badger, NF, Leupold, Farrel, and Murphy without issue.

Might be able to get a Ti Murphy rail still

Or go with the Hawkins Hybrid rings and skip the rail (my fav choice if trying to save oz).
Talleys have been good too in the past and my last 2 pairs were Hawkins.

I think I looked at Murphy after seeing it mentioned in another post. They don’t have a built in recoil lug, but I gather you don’t think it necessary?

I do like that they’re available in raw stainless steel

If you want a built in recoil mitigation (without having to drill the action) the Christensen Arms 20MOA bases are really nice, and have 2 "legs" that fit into the top of the ejection port, keeping it in place under heavy recoil, and they're only $60... I have a couple on a few of my CA rifles. They're nice, and fit really well.

Thanks for the suggestion. Hadn’t seen that mentioned yet.

Those look nice. Especially for $60. I’ve used EGW bases in the past. Nothing against them. Just figured built in recoil lug couldn’t hurt.

Keep in mind the weight of current optics. I have seen all four 6-48 screws shear off under recoil with a Burris eliminator scope.

Some of the modern (especially low $$) optics come with major drawbacks in the weight department. Which makes a recoil lug or pinned base that much more durable

Why are the pic sections on NF rails not solid? Seems like that would weaken the interface? Don’t get me wrong I’m a NF fanboy, but when it comes to their rails seems like there are better options? Not being a wise ass. Legitimately asking.
I have no idea why they do that. But I can assure you if you have enough recoil to shear off the lugs on that base or your rings you’ll have plenty of time to research this info while having you’re shoulder surgery

Take a look at the dual dovetail Leupold scope bases which are still mounted on a ton of high recoil rifles over the years. Those tiny little ears have held up to a lot of rounds over the years

I was using the 2 piece Leopold bases for years. Albeit haven’t shot many rounds through the rifle. Put some time into load development and it’s a shooter so doing a little overhaul. Also getting back into hunting.

I run the NF base on several rifles. Zero issues. I also have used the EGW base for $40 or whatever it is with zero issues.

Yes the NF has a built in lug

@iflyskyhigh

I just remembered I have a New In Box 0 MOA pic rail for a Rem 700 LA from Spuhr.

If you will donate $75 to this fundraiser we are doing, I will send it to you.

Appreciate the offer, but it's not quite what I'm looking for. I'll check out your donation. I can chip in a couple bucks regardless. Thanks

Keep in mind many non custom actions are not machined true. They are shaped like a banana and there is no guarantee that the plane across the top is strait. Very common with 700 actions. You want to very carefully install, ideally checking with a machinist square to ensure the rail is not bending when torqued down. This will translate to the scope when you install it and can cause all kinds of issues.

The nicest most well machined rail in the world doesn't matter when it's being bent due to the action not being straight.

Google Remington 700 rail bedding for more info. I have used epoxy and shims in the past. Every bergera I have owned required it as well. Just something to think about before dumping money into a 700 or other cheap action.
