Hello everyone,

I recently purchased a Remington 700 LTR 308 left handed. I plan on mounting the Leupold dual dovetail 2 piece mount (#50042). I have a Leupold VX-III 4.5-14x40 AO scope (61110). Referring to the Leupold charts it says you can usually use low rings for the 40mm scopes, except with thicker barrels. Since the LTR is thicker, will I have to go with the mediums? I want to get my scope as close to the rifle as possible.

Thanks!

I dont use the loopy dovetail but I used mediums to mount my 40mm scope on my LTR. I MIGHT have gotten away with lows as I dont have to use the front bell for adjusting parrallax.

You might want to use mediums to grip the AO a bit better. If the price of a new set of rings is all you 'waste' in this sport you are ahead of almost all of us!

Good Luck

Save ur money and buy Badger. You'll be buying them anyway so why waste time with the inadequate Loopy base and rings.

What's the downside of the dual dovetail mounts? I assumed they'd be more sturdy than the Leupold STD mounts. Plus the two piece gives me better access to the chamber. What's the advantage of the Badger mount?

& that probably is a good point about a set of rings, fairly cheap to the rest of the sport.

I agree stay away from dovetail mounts, they have to many alignment issues. Nothing wrong with a quality two piece mount though. BO, Seekins, TPS, and the Leupold MK4 products are good, but I wouldn't waste my money on anything but the MK4 line from Leupold.

Durability. Durability. Durability. Too many parts to come loose on the Loopy. The badgers, torqued properly can be removed and returned with very little zero shift. Did I mention durability. Also, given the much higher quality of the Badger, you won't tweak your expensive scope tube.

Plus, if you need to change sizes on the Badgers, they can be sold for close to what you paid for them.

Mark 4 two piece base would be fine as was mentioned earlier. Any other quality one piece rail would also be GTG. And seekins lows are what I run on my LTR, with a leuppy 40 obj. and it works fine.

What's the difference between the different Badger mounts? Some say 20 MOA cant, 30 MOA cant, 45 MOA cant, no cant????
I didn't realize that mounts were so complicated.

I spent a year with the Lupy med height dovetail rings. I now realize that those parts were getting in the way of good shooting.

I just bought the BO 20 MOA base and and 1.125" height rings and there was a night and day difference in how the gun feels to me now.

.882 or what ever the smallest badger offers will work fine. I mounted a NF x50mm on a 700p using the shortest badger offered and it worked perfectly. It's essentially the same barrel profile as the LTR. Badger or NF is the only thing worth my money I wouldn't use leupols stuff if it was given to me.
