Which scope for 1000 yard rifle

I’ve seen a couple of threads on here recommending this and that for getting into the thousand yard game. I’ve noticed a lot of the links are not working anymore or the scopes have been discontinued. I want a Leupold mark five so bad I can taste it but just can’t turn loose 2000+ bucks. Right now I’ve got a Swarovski 5 x 25 and I just cannot make myself like that scope, it’s not what I want. I just don’t like it. I can’t explain why. I’ve got several of the Leopold VX5HD 3-15x56 scopes on other guns and I really like those, but I need more than 15 power I think or so I? Whats a good scope in the 25x class? I just can’t bring myself to spend $2100 bucks on a scope.

I like 5-25x scopes because 16X is kind of in the middle of the range of operation.

West Desert Shooter makes a good case for not needing more than 16x, even at 1,000 yards.

I shoot ELR and run 3-27 on my .338LM and a 5-27 on my .375CT. You can use a lower magnification if you want but it's better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it. At most matches I and usually about 21 to 25 power most of the time depends on mirage.

Well, I guess I’m into the seven PRC game now and I’d like to do a little hunting with it. PRC I have a local F class range, but I don’t think I would get to shoot there very often as it’s kind of an invitation only thing which is a shame to be in West Texas with so much real estate and no Ranges over 500 yards that’s accessible to the public. So I guess I said all that to say this, I don’t really know, but I wanna stretch that seven out as far as I can and I don’t wanna have to buy another scope two or three years down the road. I don’t think that answers your question but it gives you a little of insite of what I’m thinking.

It sounds like you are looking for a crossover scope. A few good ones that are well under your budget:

Vortex razor 4.5-22
Trijicon tenmile 3-18
Maven rs 1.2

You don't need more than 15x. Most of all my 1000 yard shooting is in the 12-16x range roughly. But, a scope with a higher max end is more in it's sweet spot at 15x than a 15x scope for the most part. My main LR to a mile scopes are 3-24 March's. They are very nice at 18 and increasingly give up the edges and eyebox forgiveness from there to 24.

7 PRC is great and since your name suggests that you like 7s, why not?

Anyway, pursuant to the video I linked and what @ggmanning wrote, I think you could stick with the Leupold 3-15s you already have because you already like the features they have. As in, you may not need a new scope or try to reinvent the wheel that is already working for you.

That is my non-expert opinion. That and $1.80 will get you a soda.

Under $2k? Look st the Athlon Ares ETR 4-30. You will like it. Turn it up to zero at 100, turn it down for long range with a bigger field of view.

Seeing as you will be basically using it as a hunting rifle will it be carried long ways or from a stand?

Not sure what steamed cabbage means lol But check out the Tract Toric 4-25x50. It’s around $1500 and less with mil/vet pricing and also has a lot of elevation if you get to shoot the rifle at longer distances. 600 is kind of a waste of a magnum.

I was for 23 years and now volunteering for the past 7 years after retiring but I was thinking of something hunting related and thought it may be something related to where you live. Lol

For 1000 yards, I want 20X to 25X. Shooting to 1000 with some calibers is challenging enough without having to struggle to see the target.

I'm no Leupold fan boy, but they sure have caught my attention recently. More specifically, the Mark 4HD line. If you don't want to spend Mark 5 money, check out the Mark 4. You might miss out on some refinement, but the glass quality is certainly there.

This is a 3rd group from just over 1k yds with a kimber Montana in 300wsm topped with a 3-9 swfa.....hardly a long range setup.

My POA was the leaves in the corner to the upper left, but the group says enough to the fact that it's plenty accurate.

I really like something in the 15ish area for "thing shooting" and 20 plus for group shooting. I find mirage more challenging as power increases.
