Torn on the 23.7" Varmint or the 20" CTR.

Rifle will be used for range training and shooting matches out to 500-550 yards. Will be using 77 smk.

The varmint heavy barrel looks good and more velocity is always good, especially out at 500, but will it matter between the two, or will the 20" give me plenty for those shots?

the cheaper one since you're gonna want to replace the stock asap. even with a KRG bravo

there's also a 24" CTR and you could get a bravo to use the CTR mags which is ideal

but...they're still just 8 twist barrels

T3X CTR is still in the plastic stock for $1100 at Eurooptic. I paid $850 for my T3X Varmint and put it in an MDT LSS-XL chassis (super-smooth feeding with MDT 10-round mags) and upgraded the bolt handle with an Anarchy Outdoors unit. Final retail price about $1800. Shop carefully and you can do much better.

I shot 77grain SMKs more than anything else. The 1:8 twist was ample.

Your mags the mdt polymer ones?

Yes. While the T3X Varmint was a perfectly good rifle with half-MOA accuracy and super-smooth feeding, I got a wild hair about building a 6.5CM/.223 switch-barrel setup on a Defiance Deviant in an MDT ACC chassis. So I did. Split up the rifle and chassis, sold both in a day. The magazines are now used in the new rig.

I won’t be running a can anytime soon, so wondering if the ctr is worth it.

I think the varmint and using a stock and AI mags would be the cheapest outcome.
My main question was on the barrel length for the distances listed

Cool, I was looking at them since they’re priced about $40. Can you seat longer than a AR mag?

I don't have either but if it were me, I would prefer the 24" varmint. It's a 223 so recoil shouldn't be too much. The heavier 24" barrel is going to tame more recoil than the lighter 20" barrel. You can always have it threaded down the road if you truly want a muzzle device.

8 twist is fine for 77s, I shoot them out of a 9 twist without a problem.

If you know *for sure* that you won't be buying a can anytime soon AND you don't want/need stainless, then the Varmint is absolutely the way to go. This is the route I went...and then bought a can 3 months later....and still wish I had gotten the stainless.
The urge to purchase a suppressor can be limited by living in state that does not allow them. If your state does allow them, then stop kidding yourself and get one on order. :D
