Which Vintage (Sniper) Rifle to Build

I have been shooting modern bolt guns at mid to long range for about a year now, and the upcoming vintage sniper rifle match at Quantico has piqued my interest. I am thinking about building a vintage sniper rifle to compete in this match and others.
After some research I am leaning towards a Mosin 91/30 build, or a Finnish M91 if I can find one. My questions are twofold. First, is this the right choice (keeping in mind I'm on a college budget?)I also considered the Hungarian M52, a Gustav Mauser, or a Swedish K-31, would you recommend any of these models above another? Secondly, what kind of accuracy can I realistically expect from a M91/30 or any of these rifles for that matter? Any input would be helpful.
Prospective Build Specs and Limitations:
1 Budget of $500 +- 10% including optics
2 Effective to 800 yards at minimum, 1000 yards preferred.
3 Availability of ammo. I reload, but not for any of the vintage battle rifle calibers other than 30-06, so factor dies, brass, powder and bullets into the budget if ammo is hard to come by.

Re: Which Vintage (Sniper) Rifle to Build

I'll speak on the 91/30s, since that's what I have the most experience with:

You can't really build one for cheaper than you can buy an original, right now. AIM has them in stock for $579. Trying to build/buy a clone of any of the other competitors is going to be even more costly. For the 91/30s, accuracy can be sub-MOA with handloads, or possibly with surplus that the rifle happens to like. The recent batches of various Russian target ammo have been getting good results, but it's selling out fast and getting quite expensive. Really, if you're already set up to reload, you'll probably be better off going that route for accuracy, as well as cost in the grand scheme of things.

The same can be said for the other contenders, as far as reloading. There really isn't an available "match" loading for these calibers that will be either cheaper, or more accurate than what you can reload.

Don't be put off by any of this, though. The VS matches are a lot of fun.

If you are going to build a Vintage Sniper Rifle, eventually you'll want to compete in the CMP Vintage Sniper Rifle Matches which are growing in popularity by leaps and bounds.

So, regardless of which way you go, I'd recommend you first down load a copy of the CMP GSM Rules to make sure the scope and rifle fit the rules for you chosen system.

I will add that there is a new rule book every year, usually out in March. There are some changes expected in the rules of this match. I don't have any idea what they are but the interest in it is now huge, and a lot of people groused about a lot of things in the existing rules.
