I would like to talk to someone that owns one. i talked to Grizzley and they have Nobody who has given permission to be contacted that owns one. I think this is the one i want from a price and feature standpoint and just want to ask a few questions.

Hello, I run a gunsmith shop in southwest Va. I ordered the same lathe in Feb, and here it is Sept and still have not received. I call every two months and they say well call back in two more months.I cancelled my order with Grizzly and I ordered a GMC 14-40 gear head instead and it looks just like the Grizzly (different color),so glad I did. Go to Southern Tools Website.

I have my order placed with options...We will see how this goes??? Ill keep everyone posted???

The only thing i can find is the Griz has a D1-5 chuck adapter on it.. I see most everyone has free shipping except grizzly that would be a big help and decision maker also.

D1-5 instead of D1-4 spindle means larger spindle bore as well as heavier and larger spindle itself. The bearings on our machines are NSK Japanese. Look closely at the gear change knob layout on the bottom - different. The tailstock barrel on the Grizzly is much heavier than the other machine. Not the same machine.

The G0709 also is set-up with the outboard spindle spider to support barrels, plus includes the quick change tool-post.

Papagrizzly while you are sharing the differences between your machines and other brands could you explain why your 12x36 gunsmith lathe only has a max rpm of 1400? When compared to the PM1236 which appears to be identical it has something like 18 rpm selections up to 1800?
I am sort of torn between these two machines.....I know the grizz has made some nice rifles before for such a small machine.

Brodie - again, two completely different machines coming from different factories. If you check the specs side by side you will see many differences, once again starting with the D1-5 Camlock mount on the Grizzly with Japanese tapered roller spindle bearings. Those bearings come at a premium price for a reason.

If you go to the grizzly website www.grizzly.com and go the G4003G page, you will see a specifications button. I know of no other company that gives detailed specs like we do. Worth studying when you are comparing machines. I don't generally like doing the comparing for customers, but the postings with "its the same machine because it looks the same" sometimes are very misleading.

Sometimes, during design of machines, the gearing is such that speeds are affected a certain way. I just went through that on a South Bend lathe that I was designing. I needed a certain lower end speed, and the gearing design was different and unlike any on the current market. I had to lower my high end speed expectations to achieve a lower speed. Anyway, as easy as it is to talk about why a speed cannot be faster, there are engineering complications sometimes. Another thing to remember, and one that not too many people pay attention to, is the limitation of maximum safe RPM on a chuck. Another subject altogether.

There are well over a thousand G4003G lathes in service with a very good track record. Yes, many super accurate rifles have been built with them, but skill of the user also plays a role in the end result, just like shooting.

It would be nice if you were to sell an aftermarket right side spider for D1-4 lathes.
Last I looked on your website, there was only one the bigger lathe.
I am having a problem even with the smaller lathe of the barrel not being long enough to reach from left side spider and then to stick out of the big 4 jaw chuck.
Yeah Yeah I could make my own. But I have deer and antelope to go shoot.

I will very likely buy one, but I know some people, so that number could go as high as two.

I looked at the lathe in question and can tell you it looks to be a better choice over the G4003G. I ran a G4003G for about four years without issue. The G0709 has several additional features like the coolant system and foot brake. These are two features that are really worth having. The machine already has an outboard spider ready to go and comes with a 4 jaw as part of the standard equipment. The spindle bearing upgrade to NSK is light years above the Chinese bearings but you will have to adjust them after a year or so but, it's no big deal to do, very easy.

With the G0709 being heavier than the G4003G surface finish will be nicer and the machine will run smoother. Trust me when I say this, either the G4003G or the G0709 will build tack driving rifles and serve you very well. Tool up with quality RH & LH turning tools, internal and external threading tools and carbide boring bars, 1 each of .250" and .500". You'll be set. Good luck to you.

I bought one in January. My Gunsmith here in town bought one also before me so I got to look one over first. It's been okay, Warranty items have been easy to get so that's been nice. Here is mine.

Here is a little problem that happened to both My gunsmith and me. This is a picture of the run capacitor, one from my gunsmith's lathe and one from mine. So if you own one you might look!

This is good timing because I see Papagrizzly is posting on here.

Sometimes the problems like faulty capacitors don't get registered up the ladder unless a whole bunch of them happen. I'll check and see if we are taking care of it at the factory level. I am assuming that our guys got out suitable replacements to you.

I bought a PM12x36, had one of the capacitors go out also. Jotted over to the local motor store and picked up another one.

In 1984 I was involved in big effort investigation of why an Aluminum electrolytic capacitor in an F16 failed.
When, in the lab, if I make the caps fail with ripple current, they blow up like firecrackers. People can get sick from breathing the vapors from the proprietary goop inside called electrolyte. One of the chemicals we verified was MEK.

What does it all mean?
Put that thing in a bag and throw it away.
Then wash your hands.

I had one blow up on one of my lathes. It sounded like an M80 going off behind the lathe. It scared the crap out of me. Easy to replace though.

But Aluminum electrolytic capacitors have a lifetime of so many hour at so much temperature at so much ripple current. They out gas, and when the electrolyte is low, they will get hotter.

Electrolyte is toxic.

Some big companies have spent some big money working on ways to avoid this part that wears out.
