Who was Sam Whittemore and why you should know of him....

Sam Whittemore has always been honored by me since I was young and saw a marker in my town describing what he did and what happened to him for his efforts.

He fought on the first day of this countries existence - April 19, 1775.

Had they had Medals of Honor back than he just might have been the first recognized with that honor.

He was 78 years old and a hardened combat vet when he took up arms to provide us a Country.

In a neat turn of events Sam Whittemore has a direct descendant that is a member of the Hide.

The .mil community needs a SpecOps org named "The Samuel Whittemore Brigade" or "militia" or such comprised of the most hardest motherfuckers no one would ever want to fuck with.

That would be fitting, appropriate, and a challenge of a legacy to live up to.

That photo shows the marker at the second location I am aware it has been located of three.

The small park there hopefully is still known as Whittemore Park corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Pleasant Street, Arlington.

That scene is reported to have been the old homestead of Samuel Wilson aka Uncle Sam. There is a memorial to Sam Wilson about 100 yards north west (left) of that picture vantage point.

The old Whittemore residence is about two blocks east (right) of that location nearby to the old Tavern where I believe the stone was first ever viewed by me and the most historically accurate location. The existing Whittemore House (probably SWIII a son) is just behind the Tavern.

Now the stone is some .25 mile west (left) of that picture in front of the Jason Russell House, Massachusetts Avenue (Old Battle Road).

Less historically accurate but more likely to be viewed by visitors to the town.

Sent an email to the town historical society today requesting any info they have on historical attachments to SW that still exist.

Interestingly enough --I just discovered there's a amateur copy of the Don Troiani's Samuel Whittemore painting for sale on Ebay.

Ironically it's for sale on the UK ebay site in the city of Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom --LOL. Perhaps some family needing to erase bad memories?

Yes his GGGGGGG Uncle John is in the fetal position to the left of SW's smoking rifle.

The graves of Brits still flank the Battle Road in Lexington. The Consulate makes sure they are marked and a Union Jack flies over each.

Cant imagine the typical private infantryman wanted his ass kicking much more than his up until the fateful moment fellow countryman was severed from their linking bonds wanted to mete it out to him.

As much as the War of Independence was a "Revolution" it was a civil war and those never go well for either side until the end.

Finally got around to touring town and doing some "crafty" work for @gayguns to put on display at the next family reunion.....

This is a Tavern nearby to where Samuel Whittemore had his action. No longer a Tavern, the town was dry except for one establishment up until a few years ago, I think they sell insurance or some boringly mundane service occurs out of the building now....

This was the old Whittemore homestead..Most likely the son of Capt Sam lived here....

The Capt is reported to have lived across Mass Ave, that area now an empty lot....

Approximately a tenth or two miles east of Whittemore house is the Cambridge line. Menotomy was a village of West Cambridge back than.

I got Mr. Guns a wax "grave rubbing" of the stone marker. This is the general area of Sam's giving better than he received ass kicking.....

Nearby is the what used to be the birth home of Samuel Wilson aka "Uncle Sam"....

Made it to the old cemetery the likes of which just about every New England town has a few of. Found Sam Whittemore besides Mrs. Whittemore....

Sam is on the right. His stone is very old, Mrs. Whittemores even older. Sam's is a thin sheet of slate, perhaps 1.5-2 inches thick. Mrs. whittemore has a slate slab approx 3 inches or more thick. Hers has weathered better. You will see in the rubbing that Sam's has flaked and lost the detail of the "Cherub" face. The carvings on teh graves are a code of history.

Near by to Mr. and Mrs Whittemore is a common grave of Jason Russell and a troop of Minutemen that were killed fighting at his house on April 19,1775.

Noted are the veterans of April 19, 1775 as well as the greater Revolution. Sam is given his due....

This is the Jason Russell House.....

The bullet holes from 1775 are still in evidence inside the home and when they performed the last restoration of the kitchen a forensic investigation showed that there was still blood stains to be found from the battle. As punishment/warning the British piled 13 dead bodies in the kitchen of the home and accounts of the time say the blood was ankle deep.

Im kind of bummed that they emphasize Cyrus Dallin over Sam Whittemore in Whittemore Park.

They moved Cutters house to the site and other than the stone tablet and name there is little else.....

but that is Arlington 2018.

Seems if the official state hero is a town resident that should be significant.

@gayguns certainly carries the blood of SW in his love of Freedom. There is a lot of fire in his infrequent but timely posts here, Im sure he would do as his GFather to the nth power did.

Id just hope that in my dealings with this, should I ever need some balls in a really tough situation, Samuel Whittemore will reach down from on high and help me out.

Im having my morning coffee at the Fort Devens cemetery about to assume duty.

I see the German and Italian Consulates have a tent set up as they do every year at this time to perform a wreath laying at the graves of their dead WWII soldiers, POWS from the Africa campaign as well as a UBoat Captain that was a pioneer in sub ICBM technology. He blews his brains out in Portsmouth NH after surrendering his sub.

Even though they are our enemies it is good that all old soldiers are remembered.

Just did a loop of the .mil ranges at Devens, MA.

In the center of the facility is a feature named Whittemore Hill.

Im not sure if its in reference to Samuel Whittemore but that would be appropriate.

That'd be cool if it were... being in that location there's a good chance it was named after him. Then again Whittemore was a somewhat fairly well known name at first to mid part of last century all over the NE area.

Where I grew up (Owego/ Endicott area of upstate NY) we once owned a considerable portion of land and there was a Whittemore Hill, Whittemore Church (that my uncle was reverend of), Whittemore grave yard... in very middle, a top the hill of a cow pasture there's Whittemore Hill Cemetery where several more of my ancestors are buried and then there's a Whittemore Office building in the town of Endicott. None of that was named after Sam.

Side note: I'm hell bent now on trying now to find a way to buy a plot for myself in that cemetery. (Unfortunately nobody, not even the county or the city of Owego --seems to know how I go about that). Something almost country-music-good-ole-USA-hill-billy-poetic about being buried in an decrepit cemetery, so often invaded by the cows who so eloquently leave their 'calling card' in front of the tombstones. Haha
