So I can say that if you look at the demographic statistics most people moving to ID are people who are fleeing lib states and who are bringing good conservative values with them. I think that boise has been getting a little more blue, but they have a bunch of colleges. Heavy Mormon influence down there, so that should stabilize things for a good long while.

Many parts of Idaho have gotten redder as a result of the immigration from CA. I personally know tons of folks who have moved here to flee socialist states. Talking to them you would have thought they just escaped E Germany ca 1950. They really do love freedom that much.

Unfortunately, you need a visa to move here, and we are in the process of building a wall.

If you are a liberal, just know that:

Sounds like a slice of heaven. I was trying to move to northern Idaho last year but there were no jobs available in my field at the time, so I ended up in central Oregon, which I am loving so far.

Probably an odd question to ask right off, but as I see the political winds drifting in my current home state of Maine, influenced/infected by the migration of those from states who have already given up their liberty, i.e. Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, I can't help but ponder a move west in the future. Spent 3 weeks out in eastern WA, Idaho, Montana, and WY for my honeymoon in 2015, and left with a distinct appreciation for the wide open spaces, the big sky, the lack of concentrated liberal bastions, love for the people, and frankly awesome terrain for scoped rifle work. I'm a business guy, and also work in emergency medicine, so think gameful employment, a real concern when moving these days, should be gtg.

Not to be a political partisan, I'm just a liberty loving Jeffersonian Republican, and see that we are one election away from a potential loss of liberty.
Toss in the extension of the government welfare state to assure loyal voters, and I'm pretty sure I don't want to stick around and see the result.
I hope I am wrong, have spent the last 2 decades building a life and business here, but I'd like to hear from my bothers (and sisters) out west, and what they observed, or found.

If you've moved and like it, would enjoy hearing why, the corollary is also true, if you're seeing the same shift out there, may be I should stay here and fight the good fight.

HaHa. I suppose I semi cross posted this on your introduction. Bozeman now is a far cry from the good ol days...ten years ago. As a life long Montanan, it's been sad to see the progression that Bozeman has gone through. I have fantasies about selling my ridiculously overpriced house I bought in 2002 and moving back to "real Montana", but my wife loves it here and comes from a huge metropolitan area, so Bozeman seems small to her. I will probably just end up building a second home and trying to spend my free time there. When I went to school here in the late 90s, it was truly a paradise for me. If you think the outdoor opportunities here are good now, they were ten times better not that long ago. I suppose that is the natural progression of things, but I think that social media and the good ol innerweb have greatly contributed to the mass influx of people into the valley. What used to be a cautious narrative about "out of staters" moving in has now become a full blown reality, and the negative effects have far outweighed the positive in my opinion. No offense to you, it's just what I have noticed from my many years in the valley. But hey, these are first world problems for sure and if I don't like, I can change it. What is interesting to me is that more people move seem to move here that are on the opposite end of the political spectrum as what the OP was referrring to, not the liberty minded folks I seem to mesh with more easily...

Completely agree with you there. My family has had a place in Big Sky since 99'. So I pretty fortunate in the fact that I was able to come out here on school breaks to ski, hunt, and fish. Definitely in the minority in terms of myself being more libertarian than anything. It's tough though, as the education system I was brought up in as well as most of my generation (unfortunately) hammers the progressive mindset and expects you not to question what you are taught. Very telling of all the BS our country is dealing with at the moment.

We are losing more hard working conservatives moving outside than we are importing but unfortunately, those who are coming are quite liberal from big cities. Someone “liked” my post from earlier in this thread, which dragged me back here. That post was in April of 2018. Almost exactly a year ago, the day I was moving a bunch of stuff to a storage unit up here.

Well, we made it! Bought a house in September. Couldn’t be happier. Love the place, and the people. Everyone asks where we’re from, to which I reply “We escaped from California”. They’re always polite, but sometimes I can see the “don’t bring that shit here” look on their face.

Not impressed with Boise at all. To many Manbuns and a liberal vibe that we did not care for. It was a surprise how Star had such a conservative feel to it while Boise was the opposite. We first visited last September and I subscribed to both the local papers (online) to get a feel for the different areas. The Idaho Statesman reads like the San Francisco Chronicle while the Idaho Press much more to my conservative values. We really enjoyed meeting the locals and found them to be great potential neighbors with similar interests and values. We went to Rock Springs for a round of Sporting Clays and my family had a great day. What a beautiful course that proved to be quite challenging. There was also a drag race at Firebird that we could hear from our new home. I was thrilled to hear that we would get FREE admission to the track to “put up with the noise.” Our property is next to some BLM land and I plan on hanging a lot of steel for my long range shooting. Quail and Doves everywhere. Even saw a Badger in the neighborhood. There were also quite a few “whistle pigs” that we can shoot with pellet guns (no firearms but air rifles are ok.)

I can hardly wait to get out of Kaliforniastan and move back to America.

To even be able to shoot at 2000k yards and places like blm land I have only dream about or seen in pics , but Things could be far worse , they could get far worse . I like living in my area I am in a tax free state , can still buy and own firearms of my choosing with any size mag I afford to buy , and still I am close enough to other states like Md , Pa , Virginia or WV ,with far better places to shoot in . So for now at least life is good . My rent is cheap enough I can save a little . Even if my doctors are really trying to kill me . Well, I was stationed on the east coast for several years and have avoided it ever since. Same with the west coast. A few years ago we escaped Colorado and moved to Wyoming. Love it. People are friendly and polite, and the stories of the horrible weather keep out almost all the leftist loonies. Well, it does become a trifle breezy at times, but I find that if I shackle a large iron ball to my leg and drag it along that the wind doesn't blow me around. Much.

And I live a whole two miles from a 1200-yard rifle range.

Micron is a big part of the problem in the Boise area.
Back in the mid 90's I lived there and Hewlett Packard and a few other tech companies did most of the hiring.

Like the OP, I used to think about moving from New England a lot. However, over the last few years, I noticed that the places I wanted to go were slowly being overrun as stated by @lonegunman762x51. There are good, hard right people everywhere that want to bring us to where we need to be. In my case, I will stay put and fight the fight when and if it becomes necessary to do so. I have too much vested to pickup and move to a place that appears to be different but may turn out to be worse.

In a couple or three years, I will likely be downsizing my main house to something a lot smaller and buying some land in Northern VT. My wife and I like it there. Lots of super small, low population density areas which is what I want

Google the nation wide election map by county rather than state. You’ll observe that the blue overwhelmingly falls in the major metropolitan areas and surrounding counties. As a result, The city folk have a huge say in the laws that affect rural folk. The framers of the constitution were very forward thinking with the electoral college. Thank God for that.

We moved to MT from the NE. What the guys above say is true, but really only for the western half of the state and Bozeman. The NE part is awesome, and all the stuff that keeps people away from there is the main reason it is awesome. We think the prairie is beautiful, the hunting is amazing, the LR shooting is effortless. Not for everyone, as evidenced by the population density in the west, compared to the east.

What is the pulse on the Whitefish/Kalispell area? Have spent a lot of time driving through there on my way to BC the last 20 years, but not yet spent enough time soaking it up to see if I'd like to live there.....at some point FL will be my winter and that area of MT maybe May-August or whenever the snow appears.....I don't do snow any more!

Back in ‘12 I left northern Maine for Alaska. Best decision ever! Freedom like our forefathers had. I have only been outside (lower48) to help relatives move up. My family has not left Alaska since ‘12. They don’t seem to have that desire to leave the promised land.

It’s a little scary uprooting and starting over in a far away place. Figure out how to make it work for you and make the leap and enjoy the life you deserve.
