Why buy a Remington 700P?

Hello guys.

I would like to get into long range targets.. Between the 700-1000y range.
All my life I have been shooting, but always for fun or hunting. I have never ventured into the serious side of targets.

I have a quick question.. I have been reading and reading.. Most people say the 700P is the best version of the Remington going around.

If I plan on changing the stock to a (McMillan A5).. and the barrel (Krieger).. Is there any reason why I should be spending double the price on a 700P compared to a cheap basic R700 if I plan on doing major mods?

I have a budget of around $6,500... S&B 5-25x56 a the remainder on some form of the 700

Do anyone have any views on what I should be going for?

I am always of the belief, If I save enough.. purchase the best once.. rather than purchase 5x times. starting from crap and working my way up to excellent.

If you plan on immediately having the action trued and a new barrel installed, then no, it makes no sense to buy the 700P over a 700 ADL sporter from Wal-Mart or any other big box store as a donor, or even just a 700 action.

If you are content to shoot the factory barrel out first (and that'd be a LOT of 308 rounds), you could always buy the 700P and drop the barreled action into the A5, selling the HS Precision to help subsidize the McMillan. That wouldn't be a bad way to go...

Unless you want to just tap your toe in the water, don't go the 700P route. Also, I think that buying a wally world donor action doesn't really save much money in the long run, and scrounging for all the parts is a real PITA unless you're in absolutely no hurry.

Pick a gently or barely used 260 or 6.5 CM up from here in the classifieds along with a used S&B. You should have just enough room to get both with $6.5K.

Do what LCDR JGB said. You can get good deals in the for sale section and you won't have to wait or spend all the budget you have.

The other way to go:

If you are going to immediately put it in a stock, have the action trued, a new barrel, just buy a custom action, like Stiller or Kleblys.

OP, - I bought a 700P, then immediately (literally 20 minutes after picking up the gun from the shop) dropped it off to my stock guy who did the inletting for bottom metal and setting it up in a Bell & Carlson stock. After my stock barrel went south - I had a bad chamber - I replaced the barrel with a Bartlien, then upgraded to a Timney trigger.

Short version, you may want to consider just purchasing a Remington action & bolt assembly (or invest in a higher quality one!), then add the components of your choice to finish your gun. It will save you money in the long run - more money to reload with!

That's what I did as well. Broughton 5c 30" 1:10, AICS , thruster break, Jewell trigger set up for the 215 and 230 bergers.

Welcome to the Hide. With your budget for your first rifle, you'll likely fit in just great around here. ;)

What LCDR JGB and Rob01 said: with your budget you should be able to find an already customized 6.5 and a used S&B in the P/X here on the Hide and be up and running. That, or just contact a builder and have him build you what you want. With what you're talking about wanting, a number of guys can assemble you a nice rifle and meet your budget.

what he said, with a 6500 dollar budget i could have major fun. If new is your thing... AI AE (in .243 cuz im sexy) and glass from eurooptics should fall into that.. Hell i think AO even stocks some sweeet rigs that should still get you there.
