Finished fabbing the stock and made my first trip to the range with handloads for a Savage in 7-08. I wanted to see what the factory barrel could do in case I got lucky...
I use a lot of Varget for other calibers-.308 included- so figured it should work fine for the 7-08. Same case, right?
I tried 150 grain SMK's and they shot well, with near max loads of 40.5 and 41 grains printing some decent groups from a 20" factory contour barrel. 8 out of a 10 shot group went into an inch, and I suspect the other two were me...one of those days when I just couldn't keep the crosshairs dead still...
But when I look at loads others use, Varget is rarely mentioned. Slower powders, like H4350 and RL-19 seem to be preferred.
Is the reasoning behind this to fill the case more to capacity?
Think I'd get better results with a slower burning powder?
