Are they not meeting expectations? Not here to bash Vortex or anything like that. They are wonderful folks that have treated me more than fair.

I currently own two of the original Vipers and really like them alot. Just wondering about the latest scopes.

Thanks,

Paul

Re: Why so many of the Vortex PST up for sale?

I think a lot of people ordered them, and while waiting the several months it was taking to get them in; ended up buying something else. Then when the PST comes in, they usually sell it since they have since bought a different scope.

I know I've been happy with mine.

Re: Why so many of the Vortex PST up for sale?

I haven't seen that many and when one I'm interested in pops up it's usually taken after a couple days. Been looking for a 2.5-10 mil mil and maybe a 4-16 or 6-24 but I really want to see a 4-16 in person before making decision...

I keep thinking about getting one of those but they seem to get lots and lots of poor reviews.

No question.

After a couple kids, they fail the box test miserably...

This is true, they are getting them out as fast as they can. I just sold my 1-4 because I didnt have a rifle to put it on. I was very close to selling the eo-tech XPS on my 12" carbine and putting it on there. But i have used eo-techs for years overseas and they have never let me down. Plus i am used to them on a short gun.

I do plan on getting 2 4-16 FFP's as soon as money allows. Very excited for that optic.

Re: Why so many of the Vortex PST up for sale?

I've been very quiet the last week or so about the problems I had with my PST. I don't want to undermine the confidence of the masses who currently own Vortex products. However, I will say, that in the end Vortex did the right thing and refunded my money. I have moved onto a USO and couldn't be happier.

I thought that I found that absolutely hilarious. I was advised by my wife (mother of two) that I was mistaken...

First read the link below.

http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthre...994#Post2923994

The day I received my scope back from Vortex for the sloppy magnification ring I mounted the scope on my rifle. When I was done mounting the scope on my rifle, I put the rifle away in my my gun safe for the night. The next day I loaded the rifle in my car and drove 3 miles to my local gun range. I set up the rifle on the bench, looked through the scope and thats when I noticed two small bubbles on the reticle. The bubbles would increase and decrease in size when I adjusted the magnification on the scope. Needless to say I was pissed! Three quality defects in five weeks.

After five weeks and two different scopes I gave up and demanded my money back. Like I said, Vortex did the right thing and refuned my money, but what a huge waste of time and energy. I don't know what to tell other Vortex owners. Maybe I'm just really unlucky. I hope others have better luck.

Re: Why so many of the Vortex PST up for sale?

My guess is that it's partially because Vortex has been so generous in putting multiple scopes on the prize tables of so many matches lately. ...and instead of taking something off the prize table that they will actually use, shooters grab what they think is the most expensive item left on the table and head straight for the for sale forums.

I'd like to think it's not because of broken scopes. Selling something as "NIB" that you know is broken would be a quick way to ruin a reputation.

fwiw, i bought a pair of their binos and they've been great so far.

Looking forward to this.

Re: Why so many of the Vortex PST up for sale?

I came close to buying one. The price was a red flag to me even though most of the reviews seemed very positive. Their price alone is the reason I didn't buy one. I've never had the chance to see one in person and I'm sure they are decent but there has got to be a reason they are a lot less expensive. I guess time will tell and I hope they do well.

Re: Why so many of the Vortex PST up for sale?

So out of curiosity(and I have been thinking about picking another up) I looked in the optics for sale section. I saw a total of TWO on the first 5 pages(thats all I checked). A 2.5-10 and a 4-16. There were more or just as many NF's,USO's, Super Snipers, Premiers,etc...

So where are all of these PST's for sale that you speak of?

If I wouldnt have checked I was going to say it is because there have been more of these scopes purchased this year than any other "tactical" riflescope and lets face it there are a lot of people on here that just like swapping around gear to see how cool they can make their rifle look so they can show it off to their friends when they come over to play HALO or what ever the latest cool game is. This is also why you can find so many "LIKE NEW" ads in the for sale section because a good portion of the members here dont get more than 100rds down range a year and are more concerned with how pretty their rifle is.

Re: Why so many of the Vortex PST up for sale?

To be honest with you I think your view is a little skewed by the very recent influx of 3-4 that just got put up in the last month. It's hard to notice an actual trend in sales unless you have been following the sales of it for a while. Otherwise your just noticing the natural randomness of things. Any store owner can attest to this, where they might sell 1 of the item for days then one day they sell 10.

If you start looking back I think you will be surprised how rare they were on here. Something you should pay close attention to is how fast they 'fly off the shelves' as soon as they are put up. I bought both my vortex 6.5-20 and my PST off here. The viper about a year ago, and I had to look out for weeks until someone put one up and the PST in the last month or two and I was keeping my eye open for months for a FFP 6-24 mil/mil to pop up. Most the one's ever put up are the moa/moa combination, and there's a small er crowd for those it seems, but the mil/mil ones are almost never for sale and usually get sold within 24 hours of getting put up.

If your really trying to get a good picture, look at how many of the PST's have been for sale(and how long they are for sale till they get swooped up) in the last 6 months and compare that to any other brands. There are times when every other for sale thread seems to be a nightforce and they usually sit in there for a while till they are sold.

Noone can confidently say NF's aren't fine optics though, its just they have been selling them for a long time and people like changing up their weapons/optics.

Another thing to look at is how well they retain their value, they sell for 10-20% loss max from brand new, from what I've seen. On the other hand I've seen many other brand scopes selling for 20-40% of new cost, and even less after they have been unable to sell for a while and the poster keeps bumping the price down.

Re: Why so many of the Vortex PST up for sale?

IMHO i think the glass quality is on par with Leupold Mark 4's.

I have used tons of leupy's and to me the vortex PST line seems to duplicate them in terms of general percieved overall quality. And they do it for less money.

I also like the reticle offerings of vortex, although I do like the TMR reticle probably equally as well.

The turret clicks on Vortex PST's feel better to me than Leupy mark 4's.

Durability seem similar. I have never had a problem with durability though with Leupold and i have done some hideous things to my military issued sniper scopes accidentally on stalks/missions. Things that make you cringe and wonder how far off zero you just went.

Luckily though they always performed. Im not saying mark 4's are the best by any means. I dont think there is a single army sniper out there that isnt jealous of the kit the 8541's have started using in recent years.

But... for a scope that is fairly equal in terms of quality to the Mark 4s, i think the PST's are a GREAT buy economically. Like i said i have two on my list and hopefully I'll get ahold of them soon.

If product A and B are very similar to each other why not purchase product B if its considerably cheaper. No brainer to me.

I would be interested however in hearing how this persons optic failed on them though. And lets remember that companies like vortex and Leupy are mass producing scopes and not charging 3200 for them like S&B. So if something slips by QC its not a huge surprise to me. As long as the problem is taken care of I would be happy.
