Rifle Scopes Wife is looking for new optic

Well I have gotten my wife addicted to shooting long range. She started with a DPMS Mini SASS, and still has it. She is in absolute love it, and I am impressed with it as well. I started her with a PST 6-24 FFP. While she likes the optic, she is not wanting something with more power, for her a telescope with a reticule would be perfect LOL. She did say that she would be willing to give up her FFP, though I would rather not. She does want better glass though. Looking for some recommendations in the 2K range that would give her the better glass, preferably with stick with a FFP.

P.S. She did love the one March she looked through but doesn't want to dump the 3K on it.

Get the March F 3-24. Exactly the same as the FX 5-40 ($3200 nonilluminated), but $2260 (nonilluminated) shipped from Kelby, when I bought both 6-8 weeks ago. Top quality optics make the higher magnification not necessary. I usually back my FX 5-40 down to 25-30X when shooting. You can both then get what you want and spend lots of quality time together shooting.

Also add the SS5-20 to the list. Better resolution is going to trump more magnification.

Eric,
Have a new Steiner 4-16 you can try. Gun is not done yet so we could mount it up so the Steiner and your wife could have a play date. PM me if interested. It may not be the magnification range she wants but should give you an idea of glass quality.

just guessing from OP request hes not interested in anyone elses 4-16 or 5-20 scopes as his wife currently has a 6-24 PST and she wants more power.

I would reccomend the NF NXS 12-42 or 8-32. Both are in the $1800-$2000 range.

John, if she can get better glass that she likes she will stay in the same magnification range. She does want to get more power though.

From everything I have looked at, I am stuck with NF, Sightron in anything more than the 25x mark.

Magnification won't help her shoot better. A clearer optic will. But maybe the issue is the thickness of the reticle. Maybe she needs clear glass with a finer reticle in FFP or move to a SFP with the turrets matching on maximum magnification. You can shoot accurately a long way with a quality 15x.

I recently acquired Sightron's SIII 8-32; it's a very nice scope. That being said, I don't know how much of an upgrade it would be from the PST. From consensus i understand the glass is a bit nicer (resolution is very good) but I don't know how much a step up it would be. I would assume the difference is marginal. It is also offered in mil/mil moa/moa however the mil reticle is not as nice as Vortex's. I have the LRMOA-2 reticle and I find it useful as well as the 32x mag.

Edit: This came off wrong, not exactly what I intended. Sightron's glass is very good, there's obviously much better but I do not feel in any way held back by its picture. Your previous posts indicating closer to a $2,000 budget or possibly a March made me feel that this would likely be disappointing. Around $1-1,200 I believe it holds its own very well, glass is certainly its strong suit and now the ability to get matching turrets and reticle. Are you looking at the 8-32 or 10-50?

Hello. A fellow wife here who also really digs first focal. I have a Vortex Razor, magnification 5-20, with really great clear glass. I used to crank scopes up to highest power, thinking it would make up for any "freakish" user error. Experience combined with this scope makes me most comfortable at 10-15 or so. Reticle is EBR 2B. The rotations are very tactile - I can feel my adjustment without having to change position and/or look up to mess with it. I have 5 mil rotation. Dials are big enough to work with gloves but sized to fit my not-so-huge hands. Aside from the product itself, I really feel that the company does a great job in terms of customer support and outreach.

She can absolutely get better glass than the PST for in the $2000 range, obviously.

She wants more than 24x at the same time then that's asking pushing into the upper echelon here. You get what you want, buy once, cry once. I like that's guys saying about mirage.

Why do you need more mag than that? I'm tired of looking for more than that.

NOT SO FAST MY FRIEND! There's a reason benchrest shooters use 36 power scopes and up. These guys know about shooting "better", and they've proven high mag scopes give the best groups. As far as mirage, you can always turn a scopes power down, but you can't turn a 6-24 up to 40x when the conditions allow. As far as barrel heat, get a mirage shield for your barrel.

If she wants more mag, get her more mag.

Often magnification is trumped by resolution.

Benchrest is a completely different thing than what we do here. I'll wager those guys couldn't compete with the guys here in this game with their 36x or 52x scopes.
