I am about to embark on a build of a Winchester Model 70 in 7mm WSM. I am buying a lightly used factory Model 70 in 7mm WSM for a future build. My plan is to shoot it as is for awhile and not rebarrel it until I have used it a good bit or if it does not have decent enough accuracy. This will be my first Winchester build.
So my question to the group here is in reference to a stock. It just has the normal factory synthetic stock so I want to replace it as the first modification. My question: are there any details in choosing my stock that will be hindered by leaving the factory barrel in place and having a stock for a different profile? More than likely the new barrel I choose will be heavier/thicker profile than the factory barrel. My thought is that the new stock, whatever it may be, will have a larger barrel channel so I would assume that the factory barrel would just be free-floated but I just wanted to get some opinions on it. While I am soliciting opinions, anyone that cares to throw in their two cents on stock choice I am all ears.
My general thoughts on the rifle are a detachable magazine set-up, adjustable stock as this will be more for long range target shooting but I wouldn't mind having it manageable enough for off-hand shooting. Having said that if there are too many trade-offs for having both chances are that 80% to 90% of usage will be prone/bench target shooting.
So in summation, I'm buying it and shooting it as is for the time being and will be looking at the stock as the first upgrade. Overall goal will be more or less a full build: re-barrel, trigger or trigger job (will decide after some trigger time), stock, DBM, etc. Any thoughts on barrel choice I am all ears too.
I tried to use the search here but I am not too good with searching this site it seems.
Thanks,
Josh
