Gunsmithing Winchester model 70 rebarrel

Depending on which m70 it is, pre/post-crf/push.
If it is the push it should be pretty straight forward, if its the CRF it is not as it has the extractor cut you need to make.

In long action .470 bolt face you could stay with the 30-06, 280, 270, 6-06, 25-06 family, you could go for something like the 6.5x55, 7x57, 257 roberts, 35 whelen etc and any sort of wild cat you cold dream of and even some short actions could work but feeding is always something that could need working through.

The Winchester 70 isn't hard to chamber, but it can be harder than a remington.

Pre-64s require cone and an extractor cut that has to be timed to align with the extractor when torqued into the receiver.

Post 64 long actions, at least the post 64 long actions ive barrelled, have the cone and extractor cut cast into the receiver, which makes it about the easiest rifle to barrel.

Different people like different techniques to do the extractor cut.

Some hang it vertically on the mill and use an end-mill to mill a strait flat cut.

Some use a keyway cutter and make the same type of cut, but with the barrel set-up vertically.

I use a special concave keyway type cutter with the barrel set up horizontal and rotated around the Z axis 30° clockwise, making the cit on the backside. The cutter makes a convex face that matches the face of the extractor.

As for specific cslibers best suited to the long actions. Im not sure. Ive chambered them in 30-06, 300 win mag and 7mm mag without issue.

i just got 2 win model 70’s rebarreled by southern precision rifles. One was a pre 64 and the other was a post 64 with a Mauser action. Bartlien barrels were used on both and they both shoot lights out. Calibers were 30-338 Winchester Magnum and 243 Ackley.
