Wind App recommendation

There are no wind apps. The only way to get wind where you are is to have a wind meter in your hand or get really really good at reading the wind. You can try the weather flow wind meter. It’s like a third the cost of a kestrel.

Kestrel is too high dollar. Don’t get me wrong, a Kestrel would be great.

Get a Kestrel 2000 and live with it around your neck for a month or two. It's best and cheapest training you will get for wind.

A Kestrel 2500 is literally like $150! That’s the least expensive model that will also give station pressure. I guess the WeatherFlow would work too, if someone was into that kind of asshattery.

Based on this thread I’m pretty sure calculating DA wasn’t in the cards...

I find that chart too course in it's graduation. I use this.

0 mph - very rarely exists
1 mph - is more of a wind "impression" than a breeze. Open your freezer and stick your head so you can feel the cold air falling out. That is about what 1 mph feels like. Mirage still looks like a boil.
2 mph - The hairs on your arm will start to tickle, you can feel direction on your face. Tops of grasses begin to twitch; small leaves of deciduous trees begin to inconsistently twitch. Mirage just starts to get organized and lean maybe 15 degrees.
3 mph - Hairs on your arm move consistently, light grasses move furtively, leaves of deciduous trees continuously twitch around. Mirage is at about 30 degrees.
4 mph - If you turn your face into the wind, you can just begin to hear the wind rattle in your ears. Deciduous leaves stay busy and the twigs they are attached to begin to sway. Grasses are in constant motion. Mirage is about 45 degrees.
5 mph - The wind is a constant rattle in your ears, your loose clothing is just beginning to be pressed against your body. The smallest limbs of deciduous trees begin to move furtively. Grass begins to lie over. Mirage is about 55 degrees.
6 mph - Loose clothing is constantly pressed to the body, small limbs of deciduous trees in constant motion. Mirage is about 60 degrees.
8 mph - Main limbs sway. Mirage is about 70 degrees.
10 mph – The wind starts to get loud through the trees. Mirage is almost flat.

Weatherflow meter and a cheap or free app like Shooter, 4Dof, or Strelok is good enough to get you everything you need to do well for a long time. There are things the higher end kestrels do that are nice to have, but IMO I would skip the $150 budget kestrels, the weatherflow will do more for you for less money. I used my weatherflow setup to pick up a 5700 Elite link/ab off the prize table.. so it cant be all that bad. That being said, the 5700 Elite is nice and I'm glad I have it now, but theres no way I would use a 2500 over my old weatherflow setup.
