Wing Nuts_F35 Cost Overruns...Outrageous

Re: Wing Nuts_F35 Cost Overruns...Outrageous

DARPA sounds stupid when you say it out. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. It should be Advanced Defense Research Projects Agency. So when the agents are asked about where they work, they have to say ADRPA.

They'll sound retarded. ADRPA! Drpa! drpa!

The search for the all-purpose aircraft is like the search for Unified Field Theory. Might be out there somewhere but we've been looking for it a long, long time. The F-35 is a bone-ugly contraption and ought to be scrapped on that basis alone. Looks like a whale shark in feeding mode.

Funny, but it's actually true.

Kelly Johnson lived by this point.
If you want to read an amazing book discussing how the government involvement in the development phases of an aircraft program can completely sidetrack its progress, read "Skunk Works" by Ben Rich.

It discusses the development of the U-2, SR-71 and F-117 and how each "generation" brought about more government oversight and the problems it caused. The stories from napkin to flying prototype of each airplane is amazing. I think the time frames involved in getting the U-2 and SR-71 into the air will blow your mind. Compare those airplanes' durations to the F-117 and the F-117 to the F-22 and F-35 and you will see how far gone things are now.

Skunk Works is a damn good read. Every time I read of a new aircraft in development and all the associated bullshit cost overruns I think of that book. The F-35 should be scrapped right now and production of the F-22 resumed, to be exported to our closest allies Australia, Taiwan, Britain, Japan, and Israel. Cost would be cut and the more of those in the sky, the better off we are in those regions.

Re: Wing Nuts_F35 Cost Overruns...Outrageous

Most of the other countries involved in the F-35 program want carrier or VTOL versions of which the F22 is niether.
This program is the perfect example of the wild goat fuck that occurs when you try to one size fits all military aviation. The cost overruns are just icing on the cake.

Re: Wing Nuts_F35 Cost Overruns...Outrageous

The RA5-C Vigilante was a perfect example of an airplane run amok on the drawing board. The original concept was to build a supersonic fighter-bomber that stored a nuclear package between the twin engines in the tail, and would shit it out on a low speed pass over the target matching the aircraft ground speed so the nuke would just sort of hang there and fall straight down. The engineers could never coordinate the "squeeze out" and they were left with a really fast airplane and no mission. So they made it a photo recon bird and used it a lot in Vietnam.

They were plenty fast but huge - really huge - and when they trapped on the carrier the nose gear was about eight feet behind the cockpit and if it caught the last wire when it came to a stop the cockpit was sticking out past the edge of the angled deck. If you looked down all you see is the black abyss.

Then there was the F-111 Aardvark (!?!), which eventually made a pretty decent warbird once the wings stopped breaking off. And the Harrier was a deathtrap until they computerized the hover function so the jet jockeys wouldn't have to learn to think and fly at the same time.
