Wolf Match= so so. What to try next?

So I cleaned my rifle and shot 30 or so rounds to re-season the bore. I shot about 7 , 5 shot groups @ 50 yards and 5 @ 100yards.

I was looking for one hole groups @ 50 yards, but only 2 groups were 1 hole 'ers. A .266" and a .311"

So I'm thinking my rifle is not thrilled with W.Match. Well- I'm hoping my CZ 452 will shoot something a good bit better than this.

So what else to try? I can't spend $7 a box... so waht is some other ammo to try that is priced similar to W. Match??

Out of 7 groups at 50yds what was the max, min and average group size? What were the groups at 100yds? You had 2 groups out of 7 that were one hole? Bro I don't know what you are expecting but that sounds like a winning rifle to me. Most of the groups you see posted on a website are not representative of a rifle's normal capabilities. There is no better $7 a box ammo for a 22. than Wolf. If you want better you will have to spend about twice that and I can't guarantee your results to be better then. If the gun is shooting 1MOA that is about the best it should do on a good day. Sort your ammo.

Recommending 22lr for a particular rifle is a complete crap shoot. I've even seen a couple rimfires perform fantastic with generic bulk box federal...

I think your expectations are a tad high if you're getting .2's and .3's but want more... Not to say it cannot be done, because it can, but is usually requires the top dollar Eley ammo, a match chamber for that ammo, the ammo sorted vigorously, and who knows what else and even then, the gain in accuracy probably doesn't outweigh the cost of supplies... You know what to look for better than I do as far as groups go, but I still would love to know what your 100 yard groups look like. If they're 1" or lower then you've got a great setup. I don't think many [factory] rimfires out there can get much better than MOA at 100+ yards, but it seems you have a winner. Try out the TQ4 target at 100 yards and if you score a 250-25x then you will know that it probably isn't going to get much better than what you've already got.

The only way to find out if any ammo out there will work better than what's happening right now is to try it all and see what satisfies your wants. Besides that I don't know what else you could do...

I agree 100%, this is good advice. When you do find an ammo that is an improvement, BUY THE SAME LOT #####. Do not be fooled by a handful of idiots that claim lot numbers don't matter-they talk a lot more than they shoot. Lot#s are of top importance with rim-fire. For years Champion's Choice has been catering to match shooters of every NRA event, they are first class people to do business with, and are always set up at Camp Perry. They have a "special" deal where they will sell you x amount of different boxes of 22lr, so you can test the lot# in your weapon. But do try as many of the "bargain" boxes, as sometimes, you get lucky. When it is all shaken out, you had a good time shooting. Good luck.

Very true, lot numbers makes a world of difference but it's also a major pain to sort through them all to find the one that works best because when that supply ends you have to do it all over again. Pro's and Con's to everything, just like there's a tradeoff to everything as well.

check out Eley Match ammo, Sk JAGD match ammo, CCI green tag, Federal GMM... those all shoot pretty good out of most rifles, some better than others. The bad thing is when you get up into buying ammo like that, it almost costs as much as centerfire ammo... Like someone else said, buy a whole bunch of different types and test em out, and don't be afraid to try the cheaper brands, a friend of mine gets his best groups out of Federal Champion ammo... that costs 1.99 a box!!!

i love the wolf match extra in one of my 40xs the other 40 x also likes the ME but prefers the eley tenex. the tenex shoots insanely well all one hole but i still usually shoot eh ME as for plinking and such the difference is not worth tie $. If you are getting one hole groups i think you are doing well isf some open up a bit ok if you are shooting 1 inch at 50 that would be big and you should change the ammo but if you have groups in a dime at 50 i think thats reasonably accuracy for most factory guns.

+1 on buying lots of different ammo and testing. my best "cheap" ammo was winchester. still experimenting with the good stuff as soon as weather/time permits..

People will scoff, but try the Federal American Eagle. I have had excellent results with it in my Biathlon Basic, 10/22 and my T-bolt. I like the lead solid and the plated hollow point.

My 452 likes the CCI standard velocity. I get consistent .5's at 50 yards. It is in the blue box. You can get it for around $3 a box.

Maybe My expectation are to high. Well, for my budget. Without getting over $7 per 50rnds maybe this is as good as it gets.

But another question: My group in the .2's and the group in the .3's yesterday were both vertical strings. What caused that? SD's with Wolf Match from my bore is 9fps!

Those are pretty respectable groups. Is your rifle bedded? How is your trigger? How is your glass? Are you shooting from a bipod or bags? All things I would look at to fine tune your shooting session.

Vertical stringing is usually shooter error... It could be a few other things too but most of the time it's the guy behind the trigger. Are you sure your form is correct, and that your breathing is correct? Errors are amplified on a rimfire so getting too lax on them from centerfire disciplines could cause your vertical stringing in theory. I don't think this is the case due to reading alot of your posts over the years. It could be the ammo, but with SD's of 9fps I doubt it would have enough of an effect @ 50 yards. Is your barrel free floated? I'd assume this could cause it too. I don't shoot anywhere near as good as you do but when I've gotten vertical stringing in the past I've noticed it's usually because something is wrong with my form. Have you tried firing it in a vice or something to that effect to see what it'll do without a shooter behind the trigger? This could lead to the answer you seek. If it still strings like this then you know it's the rifle, if not, then you're doing something wrong and need to make some changes.

Those a very good groups IMHO. If you're outdoors in Tenn ammo temp. may have a little something to do with it. My 10/22 likes SK Std.+ best.

Here is the selection of ammo I bought to try with my CZ 455 first time:

Of these, I was only able to try the two Wolfs, the two SKs, and the Eley Sport.

The SKs generally performed better than the Wolfs, even though they are practically the same exact ammo, but Eley Sport out performed them all.

I also shot Remington Thunderbolt bulk ammo but that is purely plinking ammo; very inconsistent ammo.

Try a couple more selections. Champion Shooter Supply is a good source for all of these. The Wolf Match Target and Match Extra are both below your $7 budget, and the SKs are the same price as the Wolfs.

I'm 99% with you Okie & Runamuk!
But for kicks I'm going to try every match brand of ammo I can that I can get for under $7.50 a box. Whatever proves best I will go with for ammo to use at the matches and use the cheaper Wolf M for practice- (Or if the rifle prefers an equally or lessor priced ammo- use it overall.)

You are shooting the best ammo at its price point. Any cheaper ammo and I think you would be spinning your wheels. Stay within a certain manufacturer, that way the lube will likely be the same. An example would be to use Federal UM22 for a match and RWS Target for practice. Same lube, same manufacturer, which means you can switch on the fly without trouble. That is an extreme example I know, being that UM22 is about $20 box. Wolf is made by Lapua and it IS their cheap stuff. SK is nothing but Lapua. Eley Sport is made by Aguila.
Eley is full of fliers in my CZ so I don't use any. Fed 922A and any RWS does very well in my gun but I think Wolf is tighter at 100yds. You have to make a compromise. The best at 50 in mine yet is Polar Biathalon Lapua, but there is no cheap ammo to practice with that has the same lube. The sad fact is you cannot get consistent results in a match shooting 2 or 3 different brands for the different distance it won't work. Matter of fact you need to settle on a certain maker and certain lube and stick with that one avenue.

I just got back from the range a few minutes ago.

My 77/22 printed very *VERY* tiny groups with Aguila Golden Eagle target ammo.

Ironically, SK Match, RWS target match, and wolf match extra performed horrible in comparison.

Either way, I'm super excited that i've got a particular load that's extremely accurate with my gun, and doesn't break bank to shoot.

Just keep trying different ammo. You might be one of the rare cases where a generic ammo shoots extremely well

Not sure what you're looking for from a $400 rifle with $7/box ammo.

My 453 Varmint will shoot sub MOA at 50yds with Wolf ($4.90) or SK Jagd,($6.50) and about 1 moa with Federal GM ($4.00) and a few others. Oh yea, I've not cleaned it since I bought it. At least a couple of hundred rounds down the tube. I put 100 through it today. Maybe I should clean it?

I'm happy. You can spend a whole lot more and not get any better, then you can spend even more and find out that you still don't get any better. If you gotta have one hole groups I'd suggest you bu once/cry once and get on the Anchutz wagon.

Cover 10 rounds at 50yd with a quarter, and you're decently competitive. With a dime, and you're outstanding.

I've found that the CCI (Blue Box) 40gr Standard Velocity Target ammo works consistently better in all my .22's.

aguilla owns eley and uses the eley priming process, a variety of their offerings should make a good bargain option, for 100 yds almost certainly the sub sonic of any thing will do better, for 50yds the faster ammo may be fine if it does not go trans-sonic I would also give a good try to the federal and win bulk and cci blazer (I would not bother with the rem) you may find that the gain is not worth going from 4 to 6 to 14 cents per round, for .15 I can load .223 that will hold decent to 400 yards in a cheap delton chromed barrel

Aguilla OWNS Eley? That is news to me. I would like to know where I can obtain verification of this information.

something I heard and certainly they do cross business but when I looked around the eley corporate site made no mention so it could be stock ownership or no real connection other than the deal for the priming system looks like aguilla is a bigger company taking on military contracts to make ammo around the world, while eleys total volume would have to be low producing only high end target ammo.

You might as well just step up and shoot the Eley Tenex at $19 per box of 50. There is nothing else out there that is going to get your 50 yard groups much under 1/2 MOA from a $400 gun. What would you expect from an Anschutz? 5 shot groups smaller than the diameter of the bullet? If your gun is <span style="text-decoration: underline">consistently</span> shooting like that, congratulations; you are done with that gun and can move on to the next.

Tres, American Eagle 40-gr .22lr shoots so close to Eley and SK match ammunition in every non-match .22 I own that I can't justify buying the more expensive stuff.

Out of my 453 They shot pretty good. The Wolf Match/Match Extra shot really good out of the 453 also.

After my testing I picked up a brick of SKJagd Standard Plus. Everything I've read says they make the ammo for Wolf and that this is the same as Wolf Target match.

Last trip to the range with the CZ it kept 5 shots on a 1" paster at 100 yds. If it's not tight the problem is me, that's good enough for me to practice.

In the interest of full disclosure. In my 3rd group at 100 yds I had one drop about 4 inches low. It seems to happen from time to time. Was one round in a box of 50.

I love that CCI standard velocity. I have some Wolf, Eley and Federal I am going to test this weekend but I dont know how it could be better than my CCI blue box! Good stuff at a great price.

very respectable results for the currently lowest priced 22 lr CCI blazer 16$/525
beat double priced ammo at each distance
