Pretty happy with the turnout! A buddy and I took home some cash and NWTF memberships.
Neither of us have really went hunting for coyotes. We've shot em deer and turkey hunting but that's about it. I picked me up a Foxpro Wildfire 2 and a Mojo Critter decoy.
First 2 sets Friday afternoon yielded nothing. We packed up after 30 mins each set and headed back to some spots near home. We set up just as it was getting dark. Started with a coyote pair and went to cotton tail distress. About 8 mins later I catch movement behind me to my left. 2 coyotes coming down the hill right to the caller. I turned and smoked the tail dog and tried a shot at the lead dog but he was at a full sprint. Now I'm shooting my LAR-8 and my buddy has the 12 gauge but he was sitting on another hill.
Saturday morning we got another guy driving us around to his coon hunting spots. We set up on a side hill overlooking a crik and he takes the truck up to the farm and can see everything. We hit the Male howl and before 2 howls are done he texts my buddy that 3 yotes are full sprint to us! They come across the crik and pop out 50 yds in front of us. We each shoot at one. My dog jumps straight in the air and they all take off. We look for blood but see none. We messed that one up big time!
The next set at the same farm yields nothing. We set up again at the far end of the farm and called one in from way out but he never came all the way in. We hunted the rest of the morning and afternoon without seeing anything.
Saturday evening we set up just before dark. I set the foxpro and Mojo on the side of a hill downwind and across from us about 75 yds. After 10 minutes I see a yote at a dead sprint towards the mojo. I couldn't get him in the scope, he was about 20 yds out and moving fast. My buddy put a round of 00 buck in him and he just kept on going! We tracked him but saw no blood. Another one gone!
Sunday we saw none. But at check in out of 67 people, there were only 5 coyotes checked in! Ours made 6. A lot of guys that have been doing it for years said it was a really tough weekend. Temps were about 13 degrees without wind chill. We won the category for lightest dog.
We learned a ton and had an absolute blast! We are both hooked now. I am going to have to get an AR now. That 308 was a pig to hump around!
