Found a used Rem 700 .270 Win for $300 today. I've used the 270 platform for hunting in the past and its good enough, but the goal would be to build on this in the future. I was originally out looking for a .308 to work with as an all around hunting and shooting weapon, but this gun has peaked my curiosity. Any thoughts on using this as a starting point? What would be the logical caliber to rebarrel this to (assuming it could be done)?

Thanks,

Yep, when it's time to rebarrel have it made into a 280 Rem, 7mm-06, 30-06. You can run a 308 cased round or 57mm Mauser based case in the long action without difficulty as well. There are LOTS of choices for running in a long action.

The price is pretty good for a donor action.

Oh yeah, I'll second that. There is lots of potential in a long action 700. Hell, even if the rest of the gun is junk the action is more or less worth the $300 by itself.

Thanks guys. I think all I needed was a bit of reassuring that the value was there. I plan on using it to kill a few whitetails this fall and then maybe in the spring I will start the build process.

What about something larger than a 30-06, though? Just thinking out loud for argument's sake...

.338-06 or 9.3x62.

Those are some very interesting choices. I'm especially curious about the 9.3x62 and 338-06. I think the goal would be to build something that can knock down elk, moose or a bear if I had to and do it from a reasonable distance. That would kinda rule out the 9.3x62 because it lacks the distance (or so I've read). On the other hand, it would be a kick-ass pig/bear gun for here in NC....

sooo many choices!

Thanks for your suggestions and input everyone.
