I have heard that human shaped targets are illegal in some states. I don't think it is true but if anyone knows for sure please let me know. I do know of ranges in CA that dont allow them. Thanks

Re: Would this be illegle in any states

I'm by no means a subject matter expert, but I tend to think it's specific range/personal policy.

A lot of people/agencies don't allow black or brown spray paint on steel, either...

Re: Would this be illegle in any states

Obviously I can't speak towards state law in all 50 states, but generally this sort of thing isn't governed by state law. It's usually range policy and can vary from range to range.

Re: Would this be illegle in any states

That is THEE gayest thing Ive ever heard of, illegal human shaped targets?

I can see the news headline now;

"A Las Vegas man was caught today, a suspect in a string of shootings that have left three Clark county residents dead, and two more injured. Police detectives say Bradley Ray Ednek (aka "B Ray") discovered an unquenchable thirst for blood after attending a LV Precision shooting match. "it was the human shaped targets that got me started." Ednek was heard saying, as police put him into a patrol car.
Police Captain Shirley Adike reports that overall crime is up in the city since the human shaped targets were introduced by local shooting ranges. "people cant seem to distinguish between real and fake targets," she said "we are proposing a training program specificly aimed at helping those in the shooting community to develop a better sense of what low iron humanoids look like."
This case has brought attention to the problem that some have been clamoring about for years, the number of deaths and injuries has risen almost in conjuntion with the rise of the steel target manufacturing industry. City and county officials have tried public education announcements discouraging the use of large and chain like earings due to their resemblance to target hanging hardware, as well as the "Dont shoot me" iniciative, that teaches students to maintain movement to avoid getting hit by jumpy gunmen.
The city is currently researching a program to purchase used armor from Chinese military refugees, it is hoped that enough will be obtained to issue to most Las Vegas residents. Many of whom have resulted to wearing homade protection fashioned from phone books and corn husks, which has brought unforseen benefits to the online yellopages according to a source.

Edneck is scheduled to be arraigned tuesday on three counts of second degree murder, and two counts of attempted murder. He also stands to be charged with an unrelated count of attempted sodomy of an inanimate object, a crime commited at the time of his arrest. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty under a new statute "Kaylee's Law" passed after 11 year old Kaylee young was nearly killed when her neighbor shot at a picture of Osama bin laden on the cover of a magazine she was carrying."

Re: Would this be illegle in any states

Let's think about this for a minute: If it's unlawful to use them can I transport them if I do so without intent to fire at them, or would possession of them also be a crime?

in most states only commercial vehicles can possess and transport. and when transporting they must be secured and tarped in a manner that conceals their identity. can you imagine how disturbing it would be for a member of the public to see a 'steel target' in plain sight! shocking.

Re: Would this be illegle in any states

Pretty sure it is illegal to shoot at pictures of politicians too. Not sure about pictures of anyone else, but I've heard a big deal made out of that before. Does anyone know if this is a federal law?

I know at our range that human shaped targets are fine. Not sure about picture targets, they are kind of costly and most folks don't train with those. The hostage ones are really the only useful ones if you ask me, and there are better ways to do it.

Now we used to shoot picture targets in the army. Some of bad guys, some had hostages, etc. It was kind of funny, when we used to use those targets at the SDM course in the army and we'd go downrange to remove them, we'd find the ones used for friendly targets (don't shoot) were the ones shot up the most after the free fire. Usually they shot the badge right out of the cop target and the face was pretty mangled too. The female hostages usually got their junk shot up. Infantrymen, go figure.

For live fires, especially shoot houses but in the woods and deserts and such too, we used to use these rubber life like mannequins that you could dress up in gear with fake weapons and stuff. They hung from a string tied to a balloon in the chest; shoot the balloon and the string slips through the mannequin as it falls. This was the most realistic training using human like targets I ever did. With smoke and bad or no lighting and a little wind, they look pretty real.

The mannequin was the way to go for realism. Not sure where they got them, they looked like a cross between a crash test dummy and a store mannequin. Looking back on it, they may have been old or broken CPR mannequins. I bet that is what they were.

They'd work well for a field of zombies too if you were to set up a big zombie shoot. I guess that shit is getting more popular.

Re: Would this be illegle in any states

Wonder if shooting at head-shaped targets would be protected under first amendment? I could make a very good argument that it is a free speech issue.

What private ranges do is their own business... but I doubt that you could pass a law banning using head targets.

Of course, watch the ACLU run and hide from that one...

Cheers,

Sirhr

I'd like to see that law.

More likely it might, at the very most, get you a sit-down with the secret service but if a law like that was really on the books why wouldn't they have extended that protection to satire and other things? I bet you could make a pretty strong 1st amend argument in the case of shooting the likeness of a politician as protected under your free speech rights.

My thinking exactly.

Perhaps the government would be able to regulate it in public forums.
