WTB dog training collar

Honestly we just bought the cheap one like this
https://www.amazon.com/Training-Pet...5&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=training+collar&psc=1
They seem pretty generic because I see several versions with this collar, but they honestly work well if you are just wanting a "tone, vibrate, shock" type collar. We found a 2-pack on amazon for around $60 for our two dogs. We have a stubborn black lab rescue (in my experience almost all black labs are stubborn) and I have no complaints. We had a more expensive one that we borrowed from my parents that they used on their black lab. Their dog runs when she sees that collar, but my dog would not even respond with it on full strength. With the style mentioned above, I rarely have to use the shock, and when I do, she responds to a 2 out of 8 on the strength. Their customer service was good too. I screwed up and cut the collar to fit which caused it to unravel after a week. They sent me two replacements for free with no questions asked. They seem to hold a charge well too. My dog requires a tone or vibration every 4 seconds on a 3 mile walk and it lasts for several walks before it gets down to half charge. In a year, I've only actually had it die once.

I looked through my amazon order history and this is the one we got:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D526G8Q/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It seems like you can afford a more expensive option than what we got (we were fresh off a move and starting new jobs/in grad school), but honestly about a year later I am still happy with my purchase. Either way, the return process for amazon is very easy.

Just thought I would throw out a budget option into the mix.

It just happens that I bought a new one :giggle:. It won't be delivered until Monday. As long as it's the correct one, you are welcome to my old one.
I'll PM you on Monday after it comes in. The one I have now is a Sportdog 425.
You can have this at no charge. All I ask is that, If you have never used one, please learn how to use it correctly. There are lots of low cost videos at
Leerberg.

The leerburg videos are pretty informative. Knowing how to use them is of the upmost importance. You can ruin a dog, or ruin the value of a remote collar if it is used incorrectly. The dog can become collar wise and what the dog is being taught will never transition over to not having the collar on, and worst case scenario, the dog will shut down and do nothing out of fear. Using an ecollar has rules and fundamentals just like shooting does. Its important to learn them before use.

There is a guy in YouTube by the name of Stonnie Dennis. Best dog trainer I’ve ever worked with. I HIGHLy recommend if you can to use him and watch his videos. Send the lab to him for an 8 week board and train and you won’t hardly need the collar when it comes home. Having said that, I use dogtra collars. They are pricier but work awesome. Never use more stimulus than what is required to get your dog to correct. They are training aids not punishments. My labs rarely need correction anymore. They know what the beeps mean. And if they don’t listen to the beep that’s when you give them a quick pulse.

1 beep to stop 2 to heel. Works almost every time.

I recommend dogtra or educator. I do not recommed buying a cheap one. And like blkwlf said leerburg is pretty good for info. If hes a puppy i wouldnt recommend using a e collar though.

I've been using the SportDog 1225 Sport Hunters every day twice a day for over 9 years now on a Lab and Great Dane.
The durability and battery life is exceptional, vibration correction is by far the most used feature, 95+%. They usually just need a short vibrate, if needed two long vibrates, if that doesn't correct the behavior they get a 1/10 of a second nick, very seldom do they ever get continuous stimulation.

The SportDog training video is very good...... if YOU spend the time to understand it and properly train and acclimate the dog(s).

My dog's are only on a leash when they go into the vet. They can't wait to get their collars on because they know it will be a positive experience.

Yes, they know it's GO TIME!

We've put the SportDog collars through a pretty good test. For the last 7 years we've averaged 350 days on "patrol", I record 2.5 miles in the a.m. and 1.5 miles in the p.m. guessing the dog's are getting 8-10 miles. I've only replaced the batteries in each collar once, controllers are still on the original batteries.

When you have a dog the size and strength of a Dane a leash is basically worthless at the dog's discretion. ;)

The other thing I highly recommend is putting the collar on your arm and learning the stimulation levels. The 1225 SportDog collar has 3 power levels and the controller has 8 levels to determine what level of stimulation the dog gets for the collar setting. I tested the collar set on level 3 up from level 1 to 6 on the controller and there was no way in hell I was trying 7 & 8! It's only fair to the dog IMO. I run the collars at Level 2 on both dogs. My Dane is much more sensitive to stimulation than the Lab.

Also note that if your dog is wet the collar is 5-10% hotter.

I put it on the dog and start at the lowest setting and work my up until he reacts to it in some way then go up one more notch. That’s all you need. I only use the nick button if he’s being a danger to himself or others and I need him to stop now.
