In a few months we'll all realize how fucking retarded this all was. Peoples lives upended, our economy destroyed, over something less lethal than the common flu.
Well that changed fast.
I'm a mathematician with a minor in statistics and I keep up on some of this and last week resolved cases had a death rate of 2-3% but there were only so many cases then... By law of large numbers, the more data we get the closer to the true value it becomes.
This week the death toll of resolved cases is 14%. That now makes it 7x more lethal than the 1918 pandemic (which they had no treatment for) and on par with SARS but with a much higher infection rate. No, this actually became very serious this last week.
The hope is herd immunity and deaths will stop the spread and end the pandemic. But that could take a while. Even years. If the cases drop and thus overall deaths, and the shelter in place and social distancing helps slow or prevent spread, then people will say " they cried wolf" or "it wasn't that bad". Do you want it to be that bad? Italy bad? Do nothing like Italy be responsible for 1/3rd the global death toll? I hope this works and it does become "not that bad afterall". That's the plan. But IMO/E it's gonna get worse before it gets better. New cases and deaths are still spiking, was a steady rise but that changed last week and it's becoming exponential in order.
BTW, seasonal flu death rate: approx. .01%. Ebola 50%. Covid 19 is now 14% and rising. Mostly affects elderly.
I went to the Dr. for a refill. There is a sign in the window that states if you have a fever, stay in your car. A m.a. will come out to see you. The other Dr. called to reschedule my orthopedic appointment. The reason is they can't have people in the waiting room. FUCK!
VA canceled my surgery, canceled my pre-op, canceled my followup appt., canceled a dental appt., canceled my regular appt. and it'll be done over phone. One outside VA doc called to cancel the appt. too, just mailed my prescriptions instead. I do have to go to pharmacy to fill that outside prescription at VA so wish me luck.
All in all I think the response is adequate but the panic buying and fear mongering some politicians and the media just can't resist is the real problem and needs to be addressed for the next pandemic. And all these 2A bills suddenly coming up as a response to the virus? HR5717? Yeah, uh, not buying it. Pass it and I'll just piss on that law and keep on keepin' on, if I have to be the last standing American willing to uphold the BOR I'm prepared to do so but I'd feel awful goddamn lonely doing it.
For some people, shooting cans and paper targets in a safe setting or keeping arms for self defense is just more than they can tolerate and they're willing to use any crisis to make that stop. However, I am seeing a change, apparently some of these anti's got the wakeup call that being disarmed in the midst of a crisis ain't the smartest move after all, and that a 10rd. neutered rifle ain't gonna be sufficient. I hope they come out the other side remembering this but attention is so short in US...
