I assume most Rem 700 or similar bolt gun owners here run Jewell or Timney triggers or similar, so this may not apply to many.

Just wanted to mention for those of you who do still run the X-mark pro adjustable trigger, there soon will be a Varmint Spring Kit from erniethegunsmith.com hitting the market. Very similar to his Hunter Trigger spring, resulting in about a 2.75 lb. trigger, the Varmint Kit will include the parts (springs, etc.) you need to bring your trigger into the 1.5 to 2.5 range.

Currently this product is not listed on his site for sale, but it has been tested and the first production run is complete. I have recently received on of these kits to try. I plan on installing it as soon as my 22-250 is returned from the smith for barreling.

I should be able to post additional info including some range feedback sometime next week or next weekend. This may be a good low cost alternative for those not looking to spend $100 plus on a trigger replacement. I believe the sales price will be around $20, but I'm not certain if that figure.

Just wanted to put the notice out for anyone who may be interested.

The factory Trigger mounted "Adjustment Screw" Is a JOKE. Don't even waste your time on that. The real adjustment screw is mounted on the front of the trigger housing right under the Action. MAKE SURE CHAMBER IS EMPTY, You'll need to take the action out of the stock in order to get to it. Use a allen wrench adjust it by turning it counter clock wise do 1/2 at a time until the trigger feels right for you. Drop a drop of Blue Lock Tite on it to make sure it doesn't move or back out. Install action back in the stock MAKE SURE CHAMBER IS EMPTY, cycle the Bolt several times and pull the trigger to make sure it works. Then turn off safty while trigger is enguaged and Bang the Rifle Stock against the ground or hard surface to make sure the trigger does not misfire. Once it pasts the test you're good to go!

I have this trigger and after the new Rifle and a Vortex PST My wife cut off my funds!!! I would protest to her but she has these magical things called BOOBS and I am HELPLESS!!! So thanks for the tip, and I will pinch pennies for upgrades like a trigger and a stock!!

X-Mark Pro Adjustable Varmint Weight Trigger Modification

I bought a 700 VTR about two years ago. That X-mark pro trigger sucked. I replaced it with a Jewel. However, I recently got a 700 AAC SD and was able to get that X-mark pro down to just over 1 lb. Initially, I just cleaned it and dry fired it a couple hundred times. That got it down to 2lbs. Then I replaced the spring referenced above with a "hunter" spring from erniethegunsmith.com and it rocks now. I guess I just got lucky with this one. Still no comparison to my Jewel though...

I bet you can't adjust that POS down to 8oz, though. Here's the rifle that used to wear the X-Mark Pro junk. Let the dirt start flying!

Hog: I am aware do the adjustments on the x-mark pro, but thank you for adding that info for others as I had not thought to mention it. Even with those adjustments even the "hunter" spring will lighten the pull further as mention in Ernie's instructions. He give conservative recommendations for the installation and adjustment.

JGorski: I believe the intention is not to get to 8 oz., but more in the varmint, light hunter range. I'm sure not everyone feels comfortable on an 8 oz trigger. I have shot triggers that light and it's not my personal preference. Individuals have preferences as I'm sure you do.

I was only putting the info out there for people not interested in purchasing an aftermarket trigger, but wanted a lighter pull.

All of my Reminton 700 Rifles still have the Factory Trigger inside of them (Tuned by myself). Granted it's not the Fancy Jewell or Timmney units. It still break cleanly under 3 lbs and is more than what I needed. Besides, all of the money I saved by Not Buying Aftermarket Triggers combined is enough to buy...you gues it...MORE Rifles.

To each of his own. I can hold 1/2 MOA Groups with any of these rifles if I do my part. They ALL Out Shoot Me.

When I first got my 700 I dry fired it a couple hundred times to "break" it in before I adjusted the X Mark trigger. At first I thought I had gone the wrong way to lighten the pull because it went from 5+ pounds to 8+ on my scale. After the first adjustment the trigger was stuck at 8lbs, even if the screw was removed. I was almost to the point of taking the trigger out and permanently adjusting it with a 12ga slug at the range and going aftermarket. I figured I'd try the inner screw method and it actually worked out alright. I didn't go as low as I could have, I'll put a couple hundred more rounds through the gun (.223) and adjust it again.

Wondering if the varmint weight springs have been released. Still only seeing hunter weight on the website. Also, if I replace the spring does this make the recently announced recall moot?

I installed my varmint spring and it worked out well. I haven't measured it on a pull guage as I don't have one. I do have a tested and confirmed 2.5# trigger and the varmint spring trigger is significantly lighter.

Mike: call Ernie or right him an e-mail. He will likely sell you one, he just doesn't have the instructional with pictures yet. As for the recall, I'm not worrying about it. You can't get the epoxy off threads of the new triggers (in my experience)!so cleaning up the excess should remedy the recall issue in my mind.

Google Remington 700 trigger recall. It was announced yesterday. Theres a thread on here about it. You can enter your rifle serial number and it will tell you if you have the "bad" trigger. Basically it was any x mark trigger from a couple of days ago gong back 6-7 years.
