Suppressors XD or PPS?

I stopped by VA Arms today with my mind almost made up on the XD compact in .40, until I felt it and realized how fat it is. My only handgun right now is a 1911 .45 and it's just not practical to carry (it pretty much pulls my pants down). I like how thin the Walther PPS was as soon as I grabbed it compared to the XD's double stack. What I'm looking for is concealability, most likely to carry ITW, with the option to have full grip using the mag's extention. The XD doesn't seem like it would be very do-able to carry ITW. I wanted to see other opinions if anyone has compared the practical side of the two. I'm giving myself 4 weeks to decide... I hope I haven't made this too general of a topic.

i bought a xd sub comp 9mm for carry, but ended up trading it for a s&w j frame 38 spl . the xd was to fat and bulky for ME to carry . if your set on the super small autos , and dont care about power or accuracy the keltec , pps , etc .are fine .
i much prefer a revolver personaly . if possible, shoot any gun you want to buy , before purchase .

What I'm about to recommend is allot like that saying "mopeds and fat chicks are fun to ride but you don't want your friends to see you riding them"... but...

If you want a VERY compact 9mm that won't break the bank, is very accurate for a short barrel, has a surprisingly nice trigger and fit and finish are tops then give the Taurus 709 Slim a try....... yea... I said it, a Taurus semi-auto....something I was never a fan of before, revolvers yes, but semi's no...until now.

I have a Keltec PF9 that is about as compact a 9mm that is out there and like it well enough but after shooting a 709 Slim I now look at it like a red headed stepchild.

hahaha wth... I do't know if i can take that step quite yet. I'd like to stay with a .40 as opposed to 9mm, but I guess when it comes down to it, it really won't matter. I plan on concealing it and if it ever needs to come out, I'm sure a 9mm would work.

Somehow I got 9mm when I read your original post.. DUH...

The way I look at it is you will ultimately end up with a small group of carry conceal weapons because there isn't one to satisfy all likely parameters of concealed carry.

Say for instance, a 38spl pocket carry, a 9mm super compact IWB, and a compact 40 cal belt or paddle holster carry. All depending on what clothing you are able to wear at the time to conceal with. I'd even go as far to say a North American Arms 22mag with combo folding clip/grip would be in order if you just had jogging shorts on.

You can dress around your one gun(and not be able to carry on occasion) or carry as your dress dictates.

PPS in 9mm. Been carrying one for 3 years. It shoots POA, feeds any of the good HP bullets and has never ever hiccuped.

Since you're already using a 1911-clone, I'd say look at a Springfield Micro or my preference, the Kimber Ultra. I believe there were some .40 cal Ultras, I prefer the .45 flavor. I've heard complaints of reliability issues, but never seen them.

Best fix for your problem is a belt.

If you are looking for a really lightweight, "I need a gun for when I can't carry a gun" pistol-get a KelTec P3AT. You aren't going to find slimmer than a 1911 and any doublestack will be heavy enough you may as well carry a 1911.

Of the two, for daily carry, go with the PPS. Single stack all the way...

If you can get to a range and rent the handguns you get serious about...this will ultimately be the best way to decide what is right for you.

I'd also suggest giving the Kahr line a good look. And as others have mentioned, there are some great smallish 1911's out there.

i havent touched a glock in a couple years. like i said, i wouldn't mind sub-compact if i can get the 4th finger on a mag extention, but all 4 have to make it on. i understand there's limitations and a gun for every specific use (my collection has gone from 1 to 7 rifles in the last 2 years), but super small is out of the question at this point. the limit for me is being able to wear it IWB of a pair of cargo shorts in the summer and have a t-shirt cover it. i'm never going to carry it in pocket or while jogging or anything that would require something tiny. preferably .40 but nothing smaller than 9mm (no .380).

Ok Im gonna thor in my 2 cents. If you are carrying ITW use a holster the puts the pistol way down so only the grip ois above the waist band of your pants.Unless you are really skinny you can hide anthing with a loose out of the pants shirt. In this configuration I found barrell length of 3.5 or less to work best so the pistol did not dig into my hip, and grip size was incosiquential.

As far a deeper concelment goes (IE Im wearing a tuck in shirt) I need to go to pocket carry and in that arens both of my pocket pistols are taurus's, one is a lightwieght 38 the other their new 380.

Appendix carry 380 for when I can't have a gun, and SA Micro 1911 for other occasions.

I prefer a short, but not too short grip for 4:00 hip riding.

A good holster makes all the difference, and there is a difference between "carrying" and "packing to the store". All day carry will let you know what works and what doesn't.....

If I'm going smaller than 45, I really don't care if its 9mm or 380-the +P CorBons in my 380 are twice the bullet the best 9mm's were a few years ago. Plus I'd rather have a 380 than to break rule #1 of gunfighting (hell I'd rather have a 22lr than break rule #1).

The PPS is a great shooting gun. I like the size and the way it points. I spend most of my time shooting a glock 17. I'm amazed how easy it is to switch to the walther and keep shooting accurately. I plan on running it through some more drills this winter to see how it performs and more importantly how I perform under simulated stress. The mag release takes some getting used to and reloading the small gun can be tricky.

My only concern is the removable backstrap doesn't seem too durable. Id prefer f it wasn't a so called safety feature, and that gun would function without it.

I carry the PPS in the warmer months. I went with the 9mm over the .40 because it allows very quick follow up shots and I get the extra round in the mag. I feel the 9mm with 147gr HST ammo and good shot placement will do its part if I do mine.

The gun is 100% reliable and VERY accurate. If I know I'm going to a fight I choose a Glock 21 and a long gun but for dinner with the wife the PPS and a spare mag gets me through.

so from what i'm reading so far is there's nothing <span style="font-style: italic">bad</span> about the pps, just alternatives. i've carried my 1911 numerous times, and it would be my first choice if anything went down, but i definately need an all day versitile concealed carrier. from everything i've researched, everyone seems to love it if they own it. I figured if a gun is worth carrying on my side, it better be worth it in power (which my 1911 already serves). I definately don't need another full size...

If you are carrying, and need a pistol-then something is going down. Why not get a commander or officer's size 1911 with an alloy frame and call it a day?
Carry should not be a compromise from what you choice is if something goes down, carry is preparation for just that.

I really like the way my PPS points. The fact that it comes up like a 1911 and the sights are target sold me. I went with the 9mm version and I've had for about 3 years no with no problems. I carry 124gr +P Gold Dots in mine.

PPS. There is a 0 percent chance that a carry gun will do you any good if you're not carrying it due to bulkiness.

No. The EMP is a 3". The Micro is a 3.5" and only comes in .45.


That's mine. It is stock besides a 10-8 rear sight and flat trigger.

don't get me wrong, i love the 1911 but i keep hearing the compacts are so much more finicky compared to the full size. i definately don't ever want to have reliabilty issues with my carry piece

the reason why i say my 1911 would be my choice is simply because its .45 and i feel like its a beast. i'm looking at .40 this time around. i don't feel like i'm falling that short of a good choice with that caliber if something were to require it to be put to use.

ive been through some carry guns, Commander bobtail 1911, G23, Usp9c, Kahr PM40

First, I do not like the way 40 behaves in a small handgun, my 9s are always more controllable.

ive finally settled on a Sig P238, and even though 380 is not ideal I have never once hesitated to pick it up and carry like I have the others.

buy something you will actually carry not something that makes a good weapon in theory. While i loved my 1911 and carrying a full size 45, It did not come with me many times, and that is my fault but its reality

my friend just bought the PPS that was for sale on there recently, we are shooting it this weekend so i can get a feel for it and see if that might be a good 9mm carry choice.

That's the point of the EMP. The entire gun was redesigned to fit 9mm and .40 (shorter cartridges).

Mine has run great. I even shot a match with it. I am very impressed that they figured out how to make a 3" gun work. I'm sure there are places that I've said I would never run a gun this small. I was wrong. The EMP, with its design modifications, changed all that.

I'd be reluctant to run any 1911 in 9mm or .40 as a service/carry pistol. Not so with the EMP. It runs great.

Again, I'm really trying to stay under the $700 price point. I would love to get an EMP or the like but I just can't do it right now. I don't feel bad about it and I'm not embarrassed to state my budget. I started off thinking the XD was the way to go and it just turned out to be not quite what I wanted. Glocks and XDs are at such an affordable price but hold a unique feel, and i'm not sure that feel is for me...

This is exactly the reality I'm dealing with right here.

So am I gathering from theveryone that I should consider the 9mm over the .40? From what I'm reading everywhere, it seems to be that everyone says the PPS handles a .40 like a 9mm. I have to be honest here, and a lot of you will probably not agree with me, but I have yet to shoot a gun that I didn't adapt to. I know everyone says different guns for different people, but I'm way less worried about the initial adaptation with myself and the feel of recoil as I am concerned about reliability and quality.

PPK and p38s were good pistols, but if you're gonna get a glock copy, just get a G36 and have 45 stopping power in a Glock.

Any reason specific you don't like walthers? A really convenient tiny pistol general speaks that your .45 isn't convenient... like my 1911. A .380 isn't being equally prepared for "if something goes down" either, which is what I want to steer clear of. I think it's more than realistic to carry a caliber that is suited for any serious situation in a frame that can be carried ITW. I never plan on carrying in my pocket so I don't need some pea-shooter.

From what I'm gathering in this thread (with all due respect to everyone) is that anyone who actually owns a PPS, loves it. Anyone who doesn't, doesn't. But what I don't understand is why the general concensus is to go bigger or smaller?

In reality, I really probably should'nt be so close-minded to a glock... but they seem like the gingerbread man of the handgun world

FWIW, the PPS's needed some break in when the first came out. I ran an early release model for a while before they hit the shelves, and it took a few hundred rounds of ball ammo before it started to run 100%.

I think the magazine release is about as awful as they come, but most people select this gun as a deep concealment piece, and seldom carry reloads. The way the release pivots, I have a very tough time keeping a respectable grip on the pistol while dropping the magazine. HK's release I can run just fine, this one, is a real PITA.

I wouldn't give a crap about 9mm being a smaller diameter bullet, they preform just as well as any other service pistol caliber with good modern ammo.

To me, it's too close in size to a Glock 19, that I don't want it. The XD is about as wide and top heavy as they get...they fail on this requirement alone, for me.

yeah from what i've gathered, they do work better with break in, and the first series had a spring problem. i haven't found any threads with problems after 2008 as the most recent..

Defensive pistol for a civilian (as opposed to backup guns for LW) is more about tactics than caliber (within reason), and I'm pretty confident that a couple +P 380 with decent shot placement will win any knife fight I find myself in.

Get whatever your heart desires, but practice with it and train with it. Every day you wait for a response here to persuade you you are breaking rule #1 of gunfighting with regard to your CCW practice.

truth be told, i have to aparently let my va drivers license mature for 30 days before i can purchase. which im not sure if that's a law or just va arms' policy...i've been in va for 5 months bur never switched it over.
