I am thinking about buying this upper. I can get purchase it for a little over $800. Yankee hill makes good rails, sights, and flash hiders but never been around their complete uppers. Just wondering if anybody had any experience with them. I will probably use the iron sights for now and mount an eotech holographic sight down the road. This rifle will be used for mainly plinking from 0 out to 300 yards at steel targets.

Heres a link for the specs:

I have thought about picking one of those up too. There is a store locally here that stocks them all the time and has had very good luck with them, but I have not personally tried one.

You could get alot nicer choice of options on complete uppers @ Bravo Co.

They have a ton of different styles and options on their site for around the same price range.

Different Handguards w/ different bbl lengths and so on.

I ended up picking one of those uppers up on gunbroker.com for $435 minus a Bolt carrier group...I have $670 into it total, including a Bolt group and flip up sights. I love it... no complaints with it at all.. Its a 16", 1:7 twist barrel and it shots very nice. Not to mention it looks great..

Have you had a chance to do an accuracy test?

    Re: Yankee Hill Upper???

Not like I'd like to do... I shot some 5.56 surplus ammo through it and it did decent.. i was shooting about an 1.25" groups at 100 yrds while i was rushing to zero my rifle...so i am happy for the time being.. I have some 65 hpbt loaded up to do some precision work with... I am hoping for great results... OH i did shoot 300 yrds with that m855.. I used the gun in a tactical shoot and was rushed to site in my scope on it... but at 300yrds i had about a 3.5inch spread on head shoots....same ammo

    Re: Yankee Hill Upper???

I just rebuilt a patrol rifle for one of they guys in my dept. He had a stock Olympic A2 that he picked up cheap. He wanted to use it as a base for a personally-owned patrol rifle.

He bought a YH upper (M4 w. forward assist and dust cover installed) from, I think, Cheaper than Dirt. Asked me if I would put it together.

I transferred parts over from the Olympic and added a floating rail handguard, collapsable stock, single point sling, eotech, and a couple of other accessories.

The YH upper seemed to be nicely done. Everything fit well it only took a couple of hours to set it up. And the rifle shot perfectly through 60 rounds of duty issue, SS109 and random ammo fed through 3 different mags. No stoppages, though the cheap mag would not drop free, but that's not a YH issue. I have not shot it yet for groups. We'll have it on the range in a couple of weeks for a lot more shooting before it's declared a good build.

I was fully prepared not to be impressed with the YH parts from Cheaper TD.... , however they did measure up. I am doing another one this weekend, in fact, using the same upper and Bushmaster A2.

    Cheers,

    Sirhr

    Re: Yankee Hill Upper???

I run the same barrel. And a slightly dirrerent YHM forend. and the same brake .IT shoots everything GREAT. Except a batch of black box wolf. I had 200 rd I got in a deal and it ran in a R.R. upper fine No big deal Itraded it off to the guy with the R.R. and I run mostly surplus or handloads using LC brass
On a intresting note with a 22 rimfire kit in it sss 62 gr is a tackdriver out to 75 yds (gotta love that 1/7)

    Re: Yankee Hill Upper???

Agree re. the Wolf (steel case.) I have spent more time cleaning out gummed up AR's from that stuff. I won't shoot it (though some people have had good luck and swear by it...)

Our department got a deal last year on some Barnaul (sp?) stuff and while reliable, it won't print under 2.5" at 75 yards. And that's in my Colt LE Match Heavy Barrel carbine. With good ammo, that shoots <1" at 75 yards all day long.

The .22 kits are nice. I have an older Colt one from the '80s. But watch for occluded gas tube from the lead and gunk from .22's. I now have a dedicated upper for .22 after really screwing up a barrel and chamber in an AR a few years ago. Clean gun spotless immediately after using a conversion! If you can clean and blow out the gas tube from the upper end, so much the better.

    Cheers, Sirhr

    Re: Yankee Hill Upper???

I hear ya about the 22 kits most of that rimfire stuff is dirty. I am still alittle leary about using those conversions even though the one I have (blackdog form brownells )seems fine It can't be good for the barrel or chamber.I got it in a deal and only tryed it with the sss ammo with the hopes of using it as pest control around the house as it is super quiet. then I hear storys like yours that make me want to build a decatid 22 with a fast twist just for the subsonic stuff.
