So I'm in the market for a scope for my 5R milspec in .300 WM. I've pretty much narrowed it down to three options. Leopuld ER/t 6.5x20 first focal, mil/mil, the Nightforce NXS 5.5-22 f1 and the other option could be a used US optic like a 3.2 by 17. Which way would you go and why. my budget is about 2k. By the way I'd get a screaming deal on the leupy like 300 off screaming. others would be at the going rate. I'll say thank you in advance for your input.

To my knowledge Nightforce doesn't yet offer a 5.5-22 in FFP. I would love to be wrong about this, though.

From your options I would go with a used US Optics. If you're patient enough you'll find one that will have the specs you desire, and you'll save some cash and a long wait time. I personally would not consider the Leupold as it is my opinion that for the price you would pay for that scope, you could find another scope with more features for the same price. I bear no grudge against Leupold and have never been wronged by them. I simply do not really care for Leupold.

That's what I'd do, but ultimately it is your decision. If you can, find some way to try out each of the scopes you are considering. That will help you out more than anyone's opinion will.

Re: yeah it's another one of those posts.

When I called Optics planet that was Nightforce they set me up with it was 2290 the same price as the 3.5x15 but when I look it up on there website I can't find it. I'll search for the model number he gave me I have it written down somewhere on a post-it somewhere in the bottomless abyss of my desk.

So you guys would pay 700-1000 more for a USO or a Nightforce than the leupy? I know that there has been a lot of posts about how much better they are but that's still a hefty chunk of change.

Yes, I would. That is my personal preference. To some people the additional features and glass quality justify the expense. To others, it seems like an outrageous price to pay for such a small gain. There is no problem if you think that it is too much extra cost for not enough gain. For me, however, one look through a top tier scope and I was hooked. The level of clarity of some of the best scopes is slap-in-the-face good. I personally am mulling over a Hensoldt, March, or Premier for my newest rifle. It will be a while before I actually purchase one due to the high cost, but in my mind it is a justified expense.

One last thing: Have you considered one of IOR's newest tactical scopes like their 3-18X50 or 6-24X56? They're making some pretty big waves and impressing quite a few people.

Re: yeah it's another one of those posts.

I own both USO 3.8-17 and NF F1 (there is no 5.5-22 F1 yet).

Yes they are worth it, buy once cry once... the price of ammo is what takes the toll in the long run anyway...

My friend has 7 leupolds, I think he would trade them all for a NF or USO. He has sent the same one back 5 times and they still haven't fixed it... I got better things to do than deal with that hassle.

NF and USO quality and customer service is superb.

Re: yeah it's another one of those posts.

The Leupolds will do you just fine. Down the road you will want to upgrade to a Nightforce or better and have to sale the Leupold at a loss to fund the purchase or just spend all over again.
You will likely burn 1k plus rounds per year. You may be looking at a new barrel in 2 years. You will probably realize that you don't like your stock and or bipod pretty soon and want to replace them.
one to two years down the road with a new barrel, new stock and new bipod, 2-3K rounds fired you will still have the scope that will last many more years.
But just like the stock and bipod you will probably want to switch to a different reticle later also. You will likely buy all of the "most badass tactical glass" and not do any of the Bourne Identity stuff that you had wanted to. You might find your way into some F-class matches and realize that the FFP and Mil adjustments put you at a disadvantage and then want to switch.
So in short just pick up the USED Nightforce or US Optics scope that looks like what you want and save $500 for all of the other crap you will realize that you can't live w/out. You can switch it out as you develop a sense of what you require personally down the road as you will likely do with most of your equipment and components.
As it is w/ all things, you get what you pay for. But, lots of folks get by in competition and in the field w/ lesser optics.

Re: yeah it's another one of those posts.

There is many pages of debates here on NF or Leupolds and on the average NF ends up on top. NF is a well built scope with better than average glass. Some even say the NF glass is better than USO. The only one of the three that can be used to drive tent pegs in a pinch would be a USO.

What it all boils down to is what suits your needs and budget. No one but you knows what you that so do your research and make an educational decision and don't worry about what the guy next to you has mounted on his stick.
