Re: Yet another painted FN SPR BEAST!!

Hey guys I just got in from round to its!! Thanks for the nice comments. Yes that was the pine needle pattern. First was the masking of scope turrets etc- then the base coat of khaki Krylon- then the OD green and pine needles worked around to liking- then a touch of brown- then back and softened with the khaki. Stopped when I thought it was good and sent pic's to my brother sheriffdawg on the hide- which his reply was do not touch it anymore. I tried to do the black base coat with the fishing net but could not get to my liking on the test boards. So went with the pine needle method. Yes LRS Ranger your SPR was an inspiration to my attempt at doing something like this- Thank you sir!! FN'S YEA BABY!!

Sorry! You asked! </div></div>
+1
It might just be the picture, but it looks like it needs more contrast, shadows.
I gotta give you props for having the balls to paint the thing.

Mine came out with a bit more contrast... But I really like the white and tan on yours.

For anyone else that wants to try this out, just steal your wife's broom, and make some "fans" like the picture below. Tape everything you don't want to get covered. (serial numbers, scope glass and markings action opening, put an ear plug in the muzzle, etc) Take a deep breath, and spray the whole damn thing tan. After it dries for a beer or 2, take some OD and dark brown (or colors of your choice). Hold the broom "fans" up next to the gun, about a half inch off,and dust the gun with the krylon. Light is better than heavy, experiment on a cardboard box to get the hang of it first. I did a criss crossing pattern, trying to mimic dried grass and shadows. Mahiman softened it up a bit, and I really like that effect... I'd be interested in seeing some other jobs with descriptions on how they were done.. I have a few more ugly black guns waiting for some color...

I hope you don't mind me jacking around with your thread Mahiman...

Re: Yet another painted FN SPR BEAST!!

LRS you are fine!! I like your fire stick too. I was staying with the lighter tone for the area I hunt. In South Texas when your hunting yotes on the ground the lighter colors blend much better. I did find the SPR pic's I thought were of your gun it was actually Sgt. Badger's rifle. Anyone that wants to post there "how they did it pic's in the thread are welcomed". As you said there are many Black guns ready to get some color and high lights! I must say it took a while to pull the trigger on the paint can. But once you get started it is quick and the end product was cool. A couple of guys on the hide I have chatted with since joining have started considering spraying there rifles. As stated it is an easy reversal with brake cleaner. I am sure you have to be careful with the hoppe's when cleaning the barrel etc. But any touch ups are easy!

Re: Yet another painted FN SPR BEAST!!

Hey S Scott thanks for the poke! I did like it black- but I decided I wanted something different and individual. With the spray it can be what ever you want. I am sure that a deer or yote would not see a black rifle at 200 plus. But now it will be a little harder to see. HAHA!!

I spoke to my brother before doing the paint- he also has a SPR A1 and he was considering spraying his too. His has a factory painted OD green stock. After I completed mine he has backed off and will stay with the original finish.

I say do what ever gets your motor running!!

Re: Yet another painted FN SPR BEAST!!

Mahiman,
I didn't mean it as a bad "poke" I just gave my opinion. From my view it looks like you were a little timid on the contrast.
I had an art teacher in school that really pushed us to challenge our talents.
I remember doing a real nice pen and ink project, I was so proud of it, when I showed him he said "nice start" I didn't have much back ground done because I was too afraid of screwing it up. I spent another few days working on the project and turned out to be something I was really proud of.

Re: Yet another painted FN SPR BEAST!!

I do mine pretty much like LRS_Ranger except I just pull up a clump of grass. Nice looking rifles fellas!

This one was done with a sponge. It looks much better in person than in the pic.

I never have, but some do.

Re: Yet another painted FN SPR BEAST!!

The contrast is very important. The area I hunt is more of the lights so I went that direction. I was at the ranch this weekend and it matched vary well. I did consider a clear coat and I am not going too. Nice stick Bveal. Yours and LRS are very similar and awesome.

Re: Yet another painted FN SPR BEAST!!

I don't put any clearcoat on the paint.. it chips and wears, but I like the look of a worn rifle.. If it gets really tore up, I'll just repaint it.

B Veal.. I really like the look of the sponge job.. I think I might try that next...

Re: Yet another painted FN SPR BEAST!!

Slowly waiting for my balls to drop before I get the guts to paint my rifles. Thinking I will start with a Mossberg shotgun to learn on.

Have to say, these pictures are so stunning, I almost can't believe these paint jobs were amateur.

Impressive, Folks.

Re: Yet another painted FN SPR BEAST!!

That is a real talent. Every time I try that it looks like a first grade class did it. Thats probably an insult to first graders.

That is badass

Re: Yet another painted FN SPR BEAST!!

I agree with Proneshooter. B Veal did a knockout job with the sponge. All of them really good. But, the sponge-job next to the tree is really superb, even if it is on a Remington. I'd like to see it in person.

Semper fi,
