Your M1A Scope setup?
I have been reading and reading and there must be hundreds of different scope setups for M1As.

I have a M1A Springfield Scout in Walnut.

Don't like the forward mount, tried it, too much weight forward.

I would like to get a solid mount. Thinking about going with the Bassett Picatinny rail?

Rings, not sure would like to go with LaRue quick disconnet but at almost $200.00 a set not going to happen. Want some solid rings, ideas?

Scope, wow some I would have to sell my truck to buy. Would like a solid scope (good warranty) 2.5x10? Ideas? Prefer 30mm but would go with 1inch. Ideas?

Budget, scope under 500.00, rings under a hundred.

What say you? Pics ?

Re: Your M1A Setup?

Bassett and Sadlak ar re two good choices. Many folks also like the ARMS mount.
Just get a set of IOR rings, they're cheap while being durable.
TPS is another decent set at fair pricing.
Don't Leupold the rifle, mine ate MkIV M3's every 5 to 800 rounds. Leopold will warranty but I went with something more robust and had done with it.

Re: Your M1A Setup?

The last M1A I owned (SA Supermatch) wore a SS10X40M, Smith Ent mount and rings, a modestly priced setup that performed well.

Re: Your M1A Setup?

I picked this one up off the PX for a song. Got it sitting here on the coffee table right now goin through it and trying to figure out wtf to do with it. I am thinking a 2.5-8 VX3 LR, or MK4 for it. Or maybe an Aimpoint and switch over to walnut. Either way I got a MK4 to mount up on it and will see how she at least shoots before I go to far with it.

The mount on it is an ARMS which I am not a fan of the company but it seems pretty solid. I have a set of TPS rings that I picked up a while back and they seem as good as other more expensive rings I have on other rifles so will see how they shake out I suppose. If you plan on having the option to dump optics and go Iron the Larue mounts are very very good and a pretty nice product.

Re: Your M1A Setup?

As far as mounts go I'm not sure, but I have seen badger rings on here for $100 and as for a scope I would look at the vortex viper series. good scope for a good price.

Re: Your M1A Setup?

Have you considered the M8 rail from UltiMAK?

UniqueM8007.jpg

The Leupold Scout scope sits as low as possible and you don't need a cheek riser.

Another interesting benefit of the M8 is that it allows you to co-witness your iron sights through a low sitting Aimpoint.

You can't go wrong with a SAGE EBR stock and three mounts come to mind, SAGE M14DCSB, LaRue LT-608 and SEI 2006.
The first two are cantilever style and the SEI mount is a traditional, over the receiver mount that requires a top rail that has been machined to accept the mount.

Re: Your M1A Setup?

I'm using a Bassett rail mount, TSR med rings and a SS 10x. I'm real happy with all of it. Had to put a Karsten cheek piece on the GI synthetic stock. The Bassett removes and returns to 0 so well and so easily I wouldn't waste money on QD rings.

Bassett mount $160
TSR Rings $50 (used)
SS 10x (used) $250
Karsten $70

$530 for the whole setup

Re: Your M1A Setup?

Going to stay with the Walnut stock on my scout. I don't like the forward mounts, throws off the balance for me.

Trying to find the lowest solid mount.

Bassett has a low picatinny mount that looks good. Others?

Re: Your M1A Setup?

M1A SuperMatch, Sadlak Airborne, SS 3x9, Burris XTR low rings, sadlak mag release. - scope is a bit over your budget, rings well within it.

cheek-n-stock velcro pad - can't be drilling on this particular piece of walnut.

Let me know if I can be of any help if you do decide on the EBR.

Re: Your M1A Setup?

Mine's a LRB M25, built as a complete rifle by LRB, All USGI internals, Saco Lowell Medium barrel, NM Flash Hider, Sadlak spring guide, SEI trigger job, Mcmillan M3A Stock, Ted Brown bedding job.
Set it up with a Nightforce 2.5 X 10, Npr-2 reticle, MOA knobs, zero-stop.
I also have a scout with a 2.5x Leupold forward mounted scout scope on it.

Re: Your M1A Setup?

Take a hard look at the Super Sniper 3-9 for your M1A. They sell for $599.00 but I bought my second one for $499.00 off the sample list. IMO this is the best buy out there for a M1A. They were designed with imput from the Army as a DMR rifle scope. Rugged, good warranty, good glass, FFP and mil/mil. You have to spend twice the price to get those features on other scopes. I have one on a M1A NM and one on a LMT MWS.

Different, if you don't mind me asking, why the change of scopes? Were you unhappy with the Pride-Fowler?

Re: Your M1A Setup?

The Pride-Fowler RR800-1 is a nice scope. I like the Shepherd 310 P2 even better because of its rangefinding capability. I don't need to carry a separate range finder with the Shepherd scope on my rifle.

Last weekend I had a little spare time so I went out to the desert to get the Shepherd scope sighted in. I used 175 grain match grade ammunition at 100 yards. I think it's dialed in but I want to try some 200 and 300 yard shots to confirm.

Re: Your M1A Setup?

Here is what I have so far. I need to pick out a scope still. It is a custom build by Tim at Warbirds in TX. Heavy barrel, TRW bolt in a Norico forged RX, NM trigger group, NM bolt, unitized w/gas on/off valve, Troy M.C.S. stock, 3/4 MOA @ 100 yds with Troy flip up sights (on a rest).
I'm hoping to bag a few Zombie's!

Re: Your M1A Setup?

Hey wildbill,

I just got my SOCOM II, and I am looking for a pistol grip stock, I have never seen one like yours, that looks like the ATI stocks that I have for my SKS's. What kind of stock is that and where did you get it?

Do you (or anyone reading this) have any suggestions on pistol grip stocks for <$300?

I would love to get a Sage eventually, but I have to pace my spending to avoid divorce.

Vltor makes one, also McMillan, and a few others...

Re: Your M1A Setup?

Norinco forged reciever,Barnet medium contour SS barrel, Smith Ent cryo treatment, Smith muzzle brake and aperature front sight, NM rear sight, NM trigger, USGI bolt.

Topped with a Leupold 3.5-10x40 long range M3 scope.

Re: Your M1A Setup?

I have been searching all over.

Vltor is completely out of stock and they cost almost or right at $500.

JAE is running a special for $599 + $200 Free Options, but the $599, is a stripped down model and the accesories to get it even close to comparable the $780 EBR puts the JAE upto just under $1400 (with their current "Want It Now" specials)

So the lowest priced stock I have found is the Vltor ($500) but it is unavailable everywhere I've looked. I found one website that says I can get it for $445, but of course they dont have it either.

The next one is the Sage EBR and the best price I can find on one of those is $680 used or $780 new.

McMillan only makes one with a pistol grip, and its $500 + $116 for the cheek rest, and another $116 if you want the butt spacers.

Vltor - $445-$500 (Unavailable eveywhere)
Sage EBR - $780
JAE - $600-$1400
McMillan - $500-$730
Fulton Armory - $860 (Includes a $700 Troy Chassis)

I am looking for something for much less.
I did find Choate made (for a short period of time) an experimental stock for about $250, but that was a year ago.
I cant get a hold of them to see if they can make another one for me, until next week.

That's what the stock looks like in the post that I replied to, it looks like a Choate or an ATI.
But as far as I know neither one of them make a stock for the M1A.

I am hoping that someone may have info that I dont or that I cant find.

Or who wants to sell me their stock for $300
grin.gif

Or even someone who can modify my compsite stock that it came with.

Re: Your M1A Setup?

Here's mine.
SE mount with NF 2.5-10x. works very well.

H20man, I have a question about this setup.

I am not familiar with that Leupy scope, is the eye relief REALLY that long? I can't quite figure out how you would shoot this if it isn't similar in eye relief to an Eotech.

thanks,

Yes, That'd be great too.

I had someone respond to my WTB ad, and they have a McMillan M3A, I could get pretty good deal on it, but I am hesitant because I have never used one.
My issue is, I seem to shoot much better with a pistol grip, it seems to have much less stress on my wrist & I can relax & fire much smoother. (I'm probably just a freak that way)

Hey slpean, how would you compare your M3A grip to an actual pistol grip, I'm sure you love it and it rocks for you, but objectively how would you compare it?

Re: Your M1A Setup?

M1A Supermatch
Mark 4 M3
Smith mount
Badger Max 50's
I also had a smith install a bipod stub and put on a harris and some other minor upgrades. If i wasn't selling this I would add a cheek piece. I love this setup. Its fast, accurate as hell, and the weight takes the recoil perfectly so im always right back on target. Im gonna miss hitting steel with this thing.

Re: Your M1A Setup?

It's a Smith Enterprises front sight/block 9/16 thread and I've got a Vortex just for it. The adapter I got here and it's a Gemtech HVT can. I also have a Sandstorm that I have yet to try on the SOCOM 16 but the Sandstorm does exceptionally well on the .300WM.
