I recently took my son ( 10 yr old) out for some proper shooting instead of just letting him roam the property with a BB gun plinking cans and the occasional bird at 10 ft. Turns out the kid is a dang good shot on his own. I have a 20 yr old worn out savage 22lr semi auto with iron sights, and what feels like a 30lb trigger pull that also grinds walnuts inside the action, that I haven't bothered to clean in several years/couple thousand rounds because its just an old $80 farm truck gun that rusts faster than I can keep up with cleaning it lol.he can take that old pos and keep a 3" group at even 50 yds. Prone and kneeling No problem and the first 3 rounds I let him shoot was prone at @ 25 yds and he was under 2". I figured it was a fluke but he can repeat it all day long!
While its not sub moa shooting, it's still pretty good IMHO for a young kid right out of the box, without a fancy scope or anything. I shot competitively in smallbore when I was in high school JROTC, so I have some of those basics to pass on to him that I was taught, but I'm no sharpshooter and that was forever ago.
I'd like to find some sort of smallbore shilloutte competitions around DFW for kids to let him try out before I spend a few $$ on a little bolt action gun for him so he isn't embarrassed to be seen with dads truck gun lol. I tried a couple of google searches and couldn't find really anything solid, of course I'm not sure exactly what to search for either. Some inexpensive training or lessons for him from someone who is a much better shooter than me would be awesome to find as well. The kid just isn't into traditional sports and mom doesn't let us boys have dirt bikes to race so I'm excited I have found something he is potentially good at and loves to do. The next biggest hurdle is actually finding 22lr ammo in bulk for him right now lol
