Greetings,

Bolt handle etc take really FORCE to operate. Is that normal and will be smoother with more repetitions? Someone mentioned lubrication

I was assuming I cracked this bolt a couple years ago looking for velocity with my grendel with 8208 and 123s. I also bought it used with a grendel barrel. I put it in my 6 arc while i was waiting for a bolt and it broke it.

When I started looking closer I wondered about the structure of the steel. It looks diffrent to me in the rusted areas where it's been cracked for a while, presumably. Does this diffrent look of the metal (appearance of larger grain structure) represent a soft spot?

The other thread got taken over by anti-medicine howler monkeys and I think many here could benefit from some additional information. I tested high for cholesterol and since I don't trust doctors, or most anyone, I've been researching this topic for several months to make an informed decision about course of action for myself. The topic seems to be extremely complex and far from settled science. Some of my takeaways are:

The disease is largely genetic.
Standard lipid panels tell little about your true risks.
Most treatment protocols are using very dated understandings.
"Good cholesterol", HDL, is largely irrelevant.
"Bad cholesterol", LDL, is a small measurement of risk.
Statins were a best treatment approach for a long time but lacked understanding.
Anti PCSK9 inhibitors seem to be a very promising breakthrough and an alternative to statins.
If you are genetically at high risk you better get on top of it at a young age long before symptoms.

Some of the most credible information I came across, (best I can tell), was from Dr. Peter Attia. https://peterattiamd.com/ He has a podcast on the subject of cholesterol that's like 7 hours long. For anyone that wants it explained in detail from the early history of Lipid research to some of the latest studies, I highly recommend it. It really educated me to the point I know my Doc doesn't have a good understanding on the subject and my health is in my own hands.

Well hurricane Beryl did a number on some of the bigger trees at the back of our property. I've got two pecan trees that were 150-175' tall that are down. It seems like a damn shame to cut them entirely into wood for the smoker or chip them in place.

I was thinking about trying to cut the trunks into live edge slabs and make a table or bar top. I've got a buddy who has a sawmill, have access to equipment that can move them, problem is I have no clue if what I'm look at is a suitable candidate for cutting into slabs. I don't see any rot in the centers, ground was saturated, wind speed was too high and down they went.

What do I need to look for before taking the time to haul them out of the bottom?
How should I go about storing them before we cut them into slabs?
How long do they need to dry?

What else am I missing here?

Hi all.

I recently picked up a used Bighorn Armory barreled action to use in a .223 trainer I've wanted. My goal with this is to have a cheap to shoot centerfire trainer that I can use out to the limits of the round. I live in the Northeast so we arent' shooting 2000 yards around here. In fact, my home range maxes out at 300 and the 69 gr SMKs I reload to SAAMI length work great at that distance.

I had some minor reservations because the bartlein barrel that came with the action had a .223 Wylde chamber.

I don't really understand why a bolt gun would be chambered in .223 Wylde rather than .223 Rem but stopped worrying pretty quickly because with the action, barrel, trigger, 20 moa rail, and magazine, the price was less than a Bighorn action itself. I reload so I figured I could load long to put the bullets further into the leade.

This morning, I was thinking about loading big long bullets and then I realized that this might be by design. The longer leade of the Wylde chamber, originally intended to allow ARs to shoot .223 Rem accurately and .556 safely, just might be a great way to allow reloaders to load .223 Rem to handle longer bullets loaded into a longer than SAAMI length COAL.

Is this right? Does the Wylde provide a benefit over straight .223 rem chamber for reloaders who want to set a long 77-80 gr bullet out further and still have reasonable jump?

If this is true, I'm on to another question.

What is a good amount of jump for this kind of cartridge?

I would measure it by loading a dummy round long and let the bullet set back in the chamber. I'd measure the cartridge and then set the COAL shorter than the measured length by whatever jump I was shooting for.

Does this sound reasonable?

Thanks to all. I find that the more I learn, the more I realize I don't know. Locally, I am a knowledgeable resource for several people. But this is a topic where I'm pretty ignorant but trying to fix that. Ha. Thanks again.

The new look? Just seems weird but I'm sure I'll get used to it. I got a very rare holiday off so we went to Destin Florida. My son rented a pontoon boat for the 4th, we watched fireworks from the water, great time with grandkids!
Had to go back to work Sunday night to do the plant start-up. I think most people think I don't do anything on Sundays, but it's actually my busiest night working solo. Anyway I get there 5:30 and there's cars there, I'm thinking well shit?? And I was 100% correct.The jackass is yelling at me saying he needs the compressor on, he was told it would be on by 6! Okay it was. 6:30 he calls "there's water everywhere!!" With a forklift he ripped a 2" valve out of a 4" water main 25' up in the ceiling. I can't remember the last time I worked so hard for a full 12hr shift, okay rant over.
I didn't realize SH had merch?!
I don't have anything to safety pin a patch to, so I ordered a hat!
