Would you get into 6.5 Grendel in 2024?

I’ve been making it a habit to take my youngest of 3 sons out as much as possible over the past few years, getting him semi-structured trigger time on the Grendels, .260 Rem, and handguns. This is an older pic from 2023 at the same range with him shooting the Lilja 17.6” Grendel. We just drove down to this range on Friday for some long range and handgun work all-day.

It’s really fun watching him connect on steel with the 12” Grendel out at distance. He was ringing an 18” plate at 907yds with 100gr ELD-VT fairly consistently, I would say 1/3 rate. Wind started gusting into this pocket up against the butte, so we went from right edge of plate hold to 2-3 mils hold, depending on wind.

The 907yd plate rang out really loud and rocked around, since it hangs from a shepherd’s crook steel pole. You really knew when we impacted as it makes a loud “CLANG-G-G-G-G”.

I shot it some with my GAP 22” Bartlein .260 Rem AR-10 as well, which has much shorter time of flight, but recoil prevents me from self-spotting, unlike the Grendel.

I also shot it with the Larue 18” Stealth 2.0 using 123gr Hornady America Gunner ammo. That one is topped with a Vortex Razor Gen 3 1-10x LPVO. Glass clarity is excellent with that optic.

It was boring shooting the buffalo steel with all 3 of them at 780yds.

I wish I could get the .260 Rem to behave in a manner where we could self-spot. Maybe it needs a brake or suppressor, but I’m not a fan of obnoxious brakes. It’s already 14+ lbs in weight as well.

One thing that was really cool with the 12” Grendel was I chose not to have the brass-catcher on it this time. When we went to police up brass, it was all in a tight little pile at 4:30-5:00.

I turned up the gas through the ejection port on the Bootleg carrier since the 100gr ELD-VT is milder on the gas system than 120-123gr. 90gr TNT from Federal runs the system pretty hard even on the fully-suppressed position, so I think the Federal 90gr ammo is more energetic with charge weight and pressure.

Seems like there is room left on the table for the 100gr ELD-VT. I just used 107gr SMK data at 2500fps for my ballistic program, didn’t even mess with inputting exact Hornady BC data for the 100gr ELD-VT. Spotting the 100gr ELD-VT feels like spotting .308, but with a smaller bullet with a little less atmospheric disturbance. I prefer using my 10x Leupold binos with Mil Reticle on a tripod now for most of my spotting due to the FoV and reticle.

Rifle Scopes New hunting scope

A lot of hunting scopes have 1” tubes because they typically don’t need the extra room for extreme amounts of elevation adjustment, along with keeping them as light as possible.

It’s commonly stated that the larger the tube diameter, the brighter the scope…but that’s not the case. Lens quality, coatings, objective size/exit pupil diameter all play a role in that. Swarovski used to have a good article on their website about this, but it’s no longer there from what I can see.

From the looks of it, you’re ok with SFP? There are a lot of very good dedicated hunting scopes on the market, budget will help narrow down the suggestions. Out of the ones you’ve mentioned, the vx5 will have the best glass.
Yes, I think that’s the way to go. I have a few FFP scopes and they’re really hard to see at low magnification which is likely where I’ll spend 90% of the time.

I’m not dead set on SFP though. I definitely see the benefit in having accurate subtensions regardless of magnification.

Maybe it’s just my eyes but I looked at the VX freedom and vx5hd at a retailer yesterday and I couldn’t notice a discernible difference between the two in glass quality. Mind you it with just for a minute, inside a store.

Bullet jump on 5.56x45 when slammed into battery

The advice of @45-90 and @RegionRat is spot on. I will add that assuming only 0.002" tension is preferred is probably not the best approach for a semi automatic rifle. As they have noted setback and also having the bullet slip forward and and does occur. A primary safety issue is setback. As an RSO I have seen multiple issues with 223 and 556 loads forced back in the case. Usually these are caught and firing the rounds avoided but the potential for major issues is there.

I load a large amount of 223 for a bolt action using the LCD. However, I would never consider using only that die for sizing the neck of my 556 loads.

Noveske DDF Barrels

Do you know that the Noveske CHF barrels are made by FN, but require more QA/QC checks then any of the other companies that FN makes them for?

DD has a great barrel life but all that I have seen and used are a solid 1.5-2 MOA all day every day.

By "hot as fuck" what do you mean? Are you talking about shooting all day or auto fire a few mags? Because I can tell you I did a side by side test with a guy that had a Centurion stainless barrel. We both shot a test group and then fired 90 rounds as fast as we could. Then shot another test group immediately. My group did not change and his group opened up like a only fans woman's legs. Even after it cooled down later that day he could not group the same as the first one.

And I am still tiring to figure out what cast-off I have of yours.

The only FN's I can get to run that well are the Hodges. Personally, I don't believe any of the "special" sauce bullshit Hodge, Noveske or anyone else claims... I've had a Hodge turd barrel before. I just shoot them and see what's what. Ya don't know till you try.

A barrel is its own individual thing. In all my time, I could never expect any 2 to be the EXACT same
You're right, I wouldn't expect more than 1.5 MOA. Some are less, Some are more.

As per the Centurion...no 2 of mine have been the same...I have no doubts in those results, but that's THAT barrel. Knowing what I've seen, each one is different.

"hot as fuck" means I can't hold on to the handguard without gloves.
Here's a confirmation test I did with a Hodge after the other one went back to check for the shift issue:
5 shots @100y mag supported after eating 3 mags back-to-back-to-back (and this is some rando 62gr OTM shit)

At the end of the day, more can be lost to other bullshit:

I'm sorry we don't agree, and I also think that ACOGs suck too so there's that we don't agree on either...;)

Chasing accuracy with proof barrel.

I have. Proof prefits are a crap shoot. Of the 3 that I have, 2 don't group for shit. I have proof barrels chambered by a smith, and they shoot as well as anything else. I have yet to have a barrel chambered by a good smith from any of the cut rifle manufactures that is not able to hold sub .5 with good ammo. That Berger and fggm should both hold sub .75 easy.

Proof also used to have issues with bore diameter consistency. My theory is this combined with running reamers way past their life, is what causes issues.

I would only buy a proof prefit out of desperation... As in there is no other option. Their blanks chambered by a competent smith should be just fine.
Weird, I've got 2 proof prefits that shoot in the .2-.3s. I'd have no problem getting another.

Update on pmclaine

Come on man. We're talking about a guy that shaves his head because he can't remember how to get to the barber shop.
And. That's an old picture. I saw the new seat he got for that bike and it's a lot smaller. I mean like A LOT smaller
I saw that but I didn't want to completely out the guy. He is a really cool guy with the exception of a few "quirks".

Update on pmclaine

Hahaha, it doesn't mean people can't still give him shit. Even @pmclaine will figure it out and get back on eventually. He can even use the same user ID.

BTW, @pmclaine is a fairly low tech guy. They made him carry a Daisy Red Ryder in basic, and this is him on his way to the gym.
