45-70 SUBS - 405gr LFP/Titegroup

Hodgdon RLDC has a subsonic load listed for 45-70:

13.0gr Titegroup
410 HDY SUB-X
COAL: 2.547"
MV: 1005 FPS
27,900 PSI

I don't have the 410gr bullets, so I tried a small batch of ACME 405 LFP over 13.0gr Titegroup. I seated them a bit deeper to crimp to the cannelure. Velocities verified with a Garmin Xero C1:

Henry X 45-70, 20 shots:
  • AVG Kinetic Energy: 1242.3 FT-LBS
  • AVG MV: 1175.5 FPS
  • EX SPREAD: 18.0 FPS
  • STD DEV: 4.8 FPS
  • MIN VEL: 1165.6
  • MAX VEL: 1183.6
First, these SD and XS numbers are pretty good! Unfortunately, these were supersonic and three of the 20 shots hit the paper sideways. Even if they came in under the sonic barrier, I wouldn't want a baffle strike on my Obsidian 45. I'm wondering if I can trust any subsonic load that uses this 405gr LFP bullet to stabilize. I'd like to work up a load to launch 300gr Hornady Interlocks at subsonic velocities, using Titegroup. I can't find any data that even puts me in the ballpark, but I'm guessing 8 or 9 grains of Titegroup will get close.

Anybody try something like this? I'm looking for the lowest velocity possible that will stabilize reliably.

Rifle Scopes No Chance Optic Planet Ever Fulfills This Order

Screenshot_20250309_123803_Gmail.jpg

I was looking into optics options for the barrels from the Armalite Deals thread and noticed this (obvious) glitch on Optic Planet's website.

This same scope is no less than $249.99 anywhere else (namely, Natchez SS).

Obviously $83.99 is a pricing error. Obviously this order will never be fulfilled, right?

I know many have Optics Planet horror stories. They've never done me dirty, and they don't actually charge your account until the item ships. Oh, and it let me use a discount code.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Night Vision Clip-on decision: Voodoo S or M, or something else?

I've conversed with a couple guys here directly about the Voodoos but wanted to open it up to the group in case there's other input I haven't considered.

Obviously the price is significant, and I'm looking to step up performance wise from my C35 to something on the high end of performance. I've considered the clipir line but agree with another user that the shape and bulkiness of the unit is a turn off.

Night time hunting I can see out to 900+ yards and would like to shoot to 600-700 with positive id differentiation between deer, cattle, pigs and coyotes.

Am I ignoring the Tigir or is that a consideration also? I think fixed focus rules it out

Voodoo S is what I've been focusing on for a while but the M might really be the better option at those distances.

This is used and has some blems. The pics with the lake has boats out about 1000 meters. The 3 pics are of the normal view, 2x, and 4x. It's a damn good thermal with a huge objective lens. This one has 39 hours on it.

Hunting & Fishing Briar-Proof Clothing

Since I have gotten into hog hunting more seriously, I find myself in some serious briar thickets sometimes. It was recommended that I try briar-proof clothing. I started with some thin briar-proof chaps. I found them lacking in protection around the hips. Also in warmer weather my legs would be soaked when I pull them off because the material doesn’t breathe well and they slide over my hunting pants. Then they aren’t the greater protection from old, dry briar vines. Some of them stick my right through the chaps.

Next I decided to order some briar proof pants made of heavy duty cordura and a coat made of the same material. I haven’t worn the pants yet for the breathabilty factor. But I’ve used the coat in a number of nights recently. What I’ve noticed about the coat is that it is great protection for briars as tall as me or growing up to chest level. However, moving around in the coat is noisy as hell. Pulling a hand scanner out of my pocket, easing my arm to view through it, removing and replacing my rifle sling from my shoulder, etc all make noise. Just walking with my arm rubbing against the coat makes noise and sometimes turning my head. I’m not sure what the animals hear, but it can make it difficult for me to hear what going on around me a night unless I sit still. I have been able to sneak up in hugs a few times at night; the closest being 8 yards. I’m wondering if this fabric will become quieter with use as I break in the coat. I’m hoping it will become quiet like my filed jacket has become. I don’t wear it hunting because of all of the metal zippers.

Has anyone else encountered noisy hunting gear or clothes? Were you able to break them in with time to where they were quieter when you moved around in them afield?

One last tripod question

Hey guys, sorry for all the tripod questions. I thought I knew what I wanted, and then went down a rabbit hole after rabbit hole. I had no idea this topic was that deep.

So I'm here to take a step back and ask what I probably should have asked first, since I know next to nothing on the subject.

What would you guys recommend as the best bang for the buck tripod under $400. This is just the tripod legs, not a head. This will be used standing up and sitting down, and shooting and glassing with binos. This will prob be my one and only do everything tripod for the foreseeable future.

It's very overwhelming how many options there are. It seems like there's a big difference in heads, but I'm not so sure how different the actual tripods are. They all seem to be made out of relatively the same thing, and made mostly the same way. So maybe the legs aren't that big of a deal? You tell me.

So far, my best idea is the Aziak Front Country at about 350$.

How would you spend my $400?

Brake or no brake on 10.5" 6mm arc?

I'm planning on putting together a 6mm arc with a barrel between 10 and 12". I've never fired anything with that short of a barrel and don't know what to expect. Would a muzzle brake make it more pleasant or increase concussion? Unfortunately, suppression is not an option, and I may have to pin and weld, so I have to make up my mind before I can try it. This is mainly a "just because" project. Plinking and hunting if velocities will allow. I imagine doing a fair amount of prone shooting with it.

Does anyone have any wisdom to share?

Homemade Induction Annealer

Over the last couple of days I put together an induction annealer setup. All components minus the coil were sourced from Amazon. I turned the coil myself from solid copper wire to ensure proper inductance and distance to the case. The power supply is 24V/15A. Switching frequency of the induction coil is ~120 kHz. The coil supplied with the ZVS unit was far too large in diameter and would not sufficiently heat the brass with the 24V/15A supply. Proper coil sizing is key. I have not found a need for any additional cooling. The PCB and components are barely getting warm.

The 1/8" rod under the coil is the release mechanism to allow the case to drop. I am contemplating adding a push/pull solenoid to automate the drop at the end of the cycle but at my processing rate it isn't necessary.

Using 750F Tempilaq as an indicator my run time for a .223 case is 3.4 seconds. A tenth of a second can make a significant difference. The picture showing both cases is only a delta of 0.2 seconds. A run time of just 7.5 seconds will have the brass glowing red hot as seen in the pic. That is far too hot for annealing but I provided the pic to illustrate that it doesn't take long to over anneal. Average power consumption during a cycle with the current setup is ~260W. With a different power supply and additional cooling the system can run to 1000W.

This is a sub $100 build and the results are consistent and repeatable.

Tim
