when chasing a low SD where is money best spent. Do i need a $600 scale or chronometer? obviously a small SD will not guarantee a tight group, so when competing at 1000yds what should I spend my money on? my scale says it is .1grain, but in reality it is more like .5 to 1 grain. do I buy lapua brass? weigh each bullet and only take the ones that are +/- .01 grain my recent range SD was 9, i have seen posts of 5 or 6, do I need that? is it worth the expense? my goal is to be in the top 1/4 of 1000yrd shooters at the local competition. (i am also old, and this is about my last semi athletic competition because racing my Harley or catamaran is long past).

edit: I am interested in where to spend money on things that will shrink the group.

to be clear i am asking how to make the gun shoot better not the shooter.

Night Vision DNT Announces Price Increase

Just a heads up. DNT has announced a price increase being imposed next week. We wanted to give a heads up on this and, what we assume, will be similar announcements from other manufacturers. We will honor the current pricing as long as current inventory allows.

Good Score Sunday (SR90 + ACOG)

Not sure this qualifies as vintage but pretty sure it's configuration is long out of use.

A few months ago a guy at our club listed a TA01 for sale @ I think $850 (recently recharged for $260 by Triji). I didn't need one but excellent glass to have as a floater so offered him $600. He declined but he also mentioned some wiz bang cool precision rifle SOCOM sniper clone variant from the early 2000s he wants to off for three grand. Never heard of make/model, not in my wheelhouse, and I didn't even have near that to make a counter offer if I was interested. We exchanged niceties but went on our way.

Fast forward to this weekend and he pings me asking if I still want the ACOG, that he'd take $500 for it. I'm all over it. So we agreed to meet and he says he'll bring that rifle along just to check out. Now, he says he'd take two grand for it along with a bit of match ammo. I figure, okay, I just made bonus last quarter so was does it hurt to look at. I tossed my borescope in the car and headed out.

Did a little Google surfing and turns out this is some kind of custom civilian variant of an M40A1 or 3 built by ROBAR in the early 2000s, complete with period correct Leupold Mark 4 10x fixed scope and McMillan stock. Virtually spotless with about 2,000 rounds down the pipe. Originally sold for around $4,500 with a guarantee of half MOA out of the box. Had ever so slight fire crackling at the throat with smooth transition to basically razor sharp lands all the way to the muzzle. I read that this is basically one of the early variants (ala M40) that Chris Kyle used in the early days of the Gulf War.

A quick Zelle transfer on the phone had me driving home with it, the ACOG, and 80 rounds of 175gr Federal Gold Medal Match .308 for $2,300 bucks.

$1,750 for the SR90
$ 500 for the ACOG
$ 50 for 80rds of .308 Match (and a couple little carry cases for the ammo)

Not a bad deal for a random Sunday that just dropped into my lap. Now I need to learn how to shoot for real.

If anyone knows any more about the history and legacy of this fine-built precision rifle I'm all ears and would like to learn.

Quick review of 16" Criterion Hybrid 416R Nitrided barrel, 1:8" twist, .223 Wylde, midlength

I've been meaning to post a range report for this barrel, a .223 Wylde 1:8" 16" Criterion Hybrid 416r stainless steel mid-length barrel that is factory nitrided. I've had this set up for well over a year, I'm somewhere between 600 and 1,000 rounds down range.

I've experimented with a lot of different barrels, this one I'm extremely impressed with. I like a practical weight 16" barrel that is as accurate as possible and gassed well for both suppressed and unsuppressed. I shoot mostly between 100 and 600 yards, but I do train up close with this rifle from time to time. Basically it is the stereotypical do it all carbine for me.

Sample size of one, but I am extremely impressed with this barrel. It continues to be an honest and consistent sub MOA performer. It is also gassed absolutely perfectly for my needs. Not too overgassed with a Surefire 556 rc2, and more than enough gas with hand loads in the cold unsuppressed.

I shot a few different rifles today, this one performed as it typically does. Both AAC 77 SMK'S and handloaded 77SMK with 23.5 grains of IMR 8208 XBR performed as they typically do, .8's at 100 yards, MV around 2,640 FPS with respectable SD and extreme spread.

I also bought a box of 73 grain Berger hybrid bullets, I loaded up 10 rounds with a generic 23.0 grains of 8208, those also shot pretty well considering there was absolutely no load development. 10 shots into 1 MOA and I pulled one of them toward the end, it's also challenging to shoot tiny groups with this Vortex 1-10 optic (right side target in photo)

I can usually tighten things up if I put a 32x scope on for load development testing, but everything shot today was with a Vortex gen 3 razor 1-10.

I wanted to post a quick review of this barrel in case anyone was considering, I could not find any first-hand reviews when I bought this from Brownells for approximately $300. Money well spent, I will buy more of these.

I got this on a scope I purchased and it’s too low for my application.

NightForce UltraLite UniMount 30mm tube and 1’.125” Height. Not sure if it’s a 20 MOW cant as it is not marked on the mount itself?

Mount is in overall Great Shape but there are some touch up paint marks on the lock down knobs.
