Daughters first deer rifle

Hey guys. I want to get my 17 year old daughter a Ruger American Gen 2 for Christmas. She's hunted and shot with me for years. She's no problem but pretty proficient. Right now she's been shooting a Gen 1 American 16" .308 with a spiral break.

I'm stuck between a .270, 6.5 PRC, and 6.5 CM.

My boy shoots a 270, my dad and father in law did too but l personally have no real experience with them. For some reason this sounds good to me.

Everyone else in my world says go 6.5 CM and l have to admit it's prob perfect on paper. She's tough but a pretty small framed girl.

The 6.5 PRC seems perfect but not sure about price and long term availability of ammo.

What would you guys do?

Also would you buy now when available or wait for a Christmas deal and hope they are available?

Gunsmithing Pac-Nor Supermatch?

So I was talking to a reputable rifle builder today about what I had planned for my 700.

I was thinking about having the 26" barrel setback and re-chambered and shortened to 20" then threaded. After he quoted me the price I then asked about what the same work on a new custom barrel would cost. Turns out it's only about $300 more.

Since I am just a dumb trigger puller I asked what barrels he likes. He mentioned that the most consistent that he has seen and shot are Pac-Nor Supermatch barrels. I have heard of them before but it's not a name I see come up often.

What kind of experience have you guys had with Pac-Nor barrels?

The ERA-TAC mounts/rings are awesome, and built like a tank. The mounts above are equivalent to the T4 versions in the screen shots below. The T4 uses aluminum levers and the T1 uses steel levers. They are the same otherwise.

For trades: Hornady 6mm, 6.5mm, and 30cal A-Tips, ELD-M, Berger Hybrid Target. 6mm Creedmoor brass (Hornady, Lapua, Peterson, Alpha, Norma...)

(Sorry, a little blur on one of the pics.)

RRS Vs Fatboy Vs Two Vets Tripods

I am looking to get a tripod for hunting and long-range shooting. All three companies are within my budget, but I would obviously rather spend $750 vs $1500 if I can still get a really good tripod. I have only looked into RRS tripods but have heard good things about the other two companies. When hunting I won't be walking more than a few hundred yards and I am looking to get a very stable tripod, so a tripod that is a little on the heavier side won't bug me. I have been looking at the series 3 models from RRS for stability, not weight, since I down have any magnum rifles. I am 6'4" so if I went to RRS I would get the TFCT-34L. Any insights on these three companies and which models to get from them would be appreciated.

Common manual of arms in carry pistol (safety/mag release/etc)

So, this post comes about due to the new HK CC9. This appears to be the first pistol HK has released WITHOUT the paddle mag release (note they do have an almost equivalent in Europe with paddles that should come out over there for MIL/LE).. I for one, love the paddle release as I've trained with an HK for 20 year...it's instinctive for me. Yes, I have a button somewhere in the safe; but not full-sized, and not my "go-to."

Seems to be a lot of debate on another forum, almost critical of folks not wanting to let go of the paddles and adopt the button. My thought on this is that having a common platform be it micro/compact/full sized is an advantage. When the shit starts happening, do these people with paddles one day and buttons the next (seems to be a fanboy thing to carry different daily) remember that platform's manual of arms for that day....specifically if shit hits the fan? Perhaps I'm just stupid and have Joe Biden's memory; but seems commonality in this area would be prudent, unless of course you don't plan on reloading under stress.

I almost equate this with guns that have a safety (USP/1911/Beretta) vs ones that do not (Glock, VP9). If somebody has trained years and years without a safety and then gets into guns with a safety as a carry weapon and don't train really well, are they going to, in the heat of the moment, flick that safety off or is adrenalin going to kick in and they fall back to the scenario they've had the most training?

Definitely interested in The Hide's take on this.

Thanks in advance.
