Rifle Scopes Mk12 Scope for Modern Times

I just bought a PRI Mk12 Mod 0, and it will need some glass. I'm not a huge clone whore, so I am not dead set on trying to hunt down the old Leupold, nor am I set on running a SFP 2.5-10 NF scope.

If you were going to put a more "modern" optic on a Mk12, what would it be?

I'm looking to spend between $1700 and $2200. I've been eyeballing the 2.5-20 NX8, based off of the size, weight, reticles and pricing. Another option on the table is a Razor HD Gen III 1-10 (different class of scope, but very good in my experience, and would fit the bill). An older Leupold Mk6, or a Mk 5 in the 3.6-18 variety would be acceptable too. I would like something that's relatively light, compact, reliable and FFP.

Rifle Scopes Vector Optics 34mm Continental 5-30x56mm FFP with VCT-20 Reticle

I just got this scope from Vector Optics. Its online official store is at www.vector2007.com sells it for $833. The 34mm Continental is Vector's new premium line of scopes. Vector claims the following: German Schott ED HD Glass, German Optics System by Using LaREE Lens & VePRO FMC, > 90% Light Transmission.

To my eyes, the glass in my 5-30x56mm is incredibly good. It seems better than my Kahles K624i gen 1. The eye box is bigger and easier to use. I never thought that my K624i had any tunneling effect until I view it side by side with the Vector Continental. My Kahles K624i seems a bit "flat" compare to the Continental. The Continental also seems a bit sharper and brighter at 30x compare to the Kahles at 24x, too. That's shocking to me. So maybe Vector Optic's claims of German Schott glass and German tracking system are true. I have never heard of LaREE lens and VePRO FMC. I'm not knowledgeable about optics so it all sounds a bit like Greek to me. Maybe someone knows about this stuff and chimes in? My Continental's glass is definitely better than all my Sightron SIIIs, Kahles, and Vortexes (non Razor). I think I will bring this scope into a store and compare them to whatever high end stuff I find in there. That would be fun. Anyway, I'm hoping that someone out there have seen these Vector 34mm Continental stuff would chime and tell me what you think of it.

The reticle is in milrads and is fairly clean for a xmass tree type. I think the center dot could be a little smaller. I like the way the vertical stadia subtensions are set. They are just easier to count this way. Only the central dot of the reticle is lit. And it seems to bleed a little bit and not evenly lit, too. Maybe it's just my eyes. This doesn't bother me at all.

Both turrets have the typical locking feature, popping up to dial, pushing down to lock. The elevation turret has zero-stop. The turrets a re easy to turn and count clicks. When I turn the elevation turret quickly. I can easily count the clicks without missing any. The clicks are not loud but I can hear it easily enough. There is some play between clicks but I wouldn't call it mushy. This little play actually makes it easier to count clicks. The turrets on the Kahles are sharper and there is virtually no play between clicks. The Kahles turret's clicks are very tightly spaced comparing to the Continental. All together I would miscount the clicks on my Kahles if I'm not careful or turn too quickly.

My Continental's elevation turret is limited to 18 mils. Whether I set the zero or reset to default, I get 18 mils total travel. So the advertised 26 mils total travel is not all usable as far as the elevation turret is concerned. The total range is usable in the sense where you set your zero-stop. The Kahles turret has more range than the Continental for sure. Anyway you set the Continental's zero-stop by removing the turret cap and turning a circular ring inside the cap. Turning this ring clockwise all the way sets the zero to wherever the turret is currently dialed; turning counter clockwise, resets the zero. It's pretty simple and easy to do.

For years, we all have seen Vector scopes at gun shows and relegate them to lower end stuff. In my mind, I would not expect 12 mils when I dial 12 on these scopes. I'm not sure why I bought this scope. Maybe it's the recent trend of so-so brands turning out very good stuff for their new "premium" line of products convinced me to give it a try. I'm glad I did.

I have not shot the 34mm Continental yet. I don't know if the tracking is accurate or reliable under recoil. We'll see how it does this weekend. The glass is so good that it would be a terrible waste if the tracking isn't reliable and accurate.

Anyone else bought one of these yet?

Short 308 Diminishing returns

Hey guys, first post and not a very technical question.

I'm a brush hunter and am wanting to setup a light and handy .308 with a 16" barrel for my can. I'll run a lightweight 2-7. This would be 300y max but more like inside 100 realistically.

Major players l've found so far are Tikka t3x, Howa 1500 super lite short, and Ruger American Gen 2. Or starting a build with the Howa barrelled action.

Nice guns are always nicer of course, but would you guys spend more than 600 for a Gen 2 Ruger American?

Seating Depth / Lands Measurement Way Off?

Reloading novice here - I've got an RCBS Matchermaster FL die set that I've been using for a while but never explicitly tested anything with seating depth. This is for a 6.4 CM Tikka that was recently rebarreled with a Proof Match Contour 26" steel, machined from a blank by a gunsmith. I've picked up the Hornady OAL tool and Hornady bullet comparator set, and I'm going through the process of trying to find the lands on my setup using the same 140gr ELDMs I've been loading for this rifle for a while (with mediocre results due to my inexperience). The way I initially set up my seating die was just to match the COAL of the factory 140 ELDMs I shoot regularly. However, consistenly I find that with the OAL gauge I'm seeing a much shorter length for the lands vs the length I already load my reloads to (or to what box ammo is at).

In the comparator, I'm seeing this:
  • OAL Gauge: 2.1075
  • Reloaded 140gr ELDM seated with "4.30" on the die mic: 2.1915
  • Factory 140 gr ELDM: Also 2.1915
  • Dummy round loaded with 140 ELDM, die at "3.45": 2.1040
I've checked the OAL measurement several times and even tried pushing "hard" on it to see if it wasn't actually into the lands, but I get the same measurement plus or minus maybe 1 thou. The difference is COAL is very obvious between box ammo vs what is supposedly "at the lands".

In the picture, the top is the OAL gauge's modified case at the lands, supposedly, and the others are as labeled. The last picture shows more clearly that there's scuffing on the ogive for basically all of them, but especially the longer ones. Those that measured 2.1915 are very difficult to cycle, and oddly that includes the factory/box ammo. I tried a couple, and one I had to smack the bolt back to get it out, while the other factory round cycled more or less normal. I do recall from a recent match shooting box ammo that I had some difficult cycling at times, but I thought at the time it was maybe heat-related or not to do with my ammo at least. Note also that when I loaded a dummy at the lands measurement, it cycled with no resistance.

  1. Why would factory ammo be so tight in this rebarrel? Is that an indication that my gunsmith spun the barrel incorrectly, or maybe they were to tight on the chamber? Should that be considered defective?
  2. Am I missing anything in my process measuring the lands, or would it be logical to find the lands and then just back off .020-.060?
  3. Is it even safe to send something like the shorter rounds pictured? How can I tell the minimum overall length that's safe?

Rifle Scopes ATACR 4-16 for “SPR” or……

So currently thinking about getting a new scope for my 16” LWRC DI I tried the LPVO route but was not satisfied with the performance down range of the 1-10s and personally I would like parallax. I know the 2-10 MK5 is coming soon but reticle options are lacking and I really want more that 10x.

EO currently has a NF 4-16 in their demo pile and it seems to fit the bill as far as features and quality. What else is out there on the 2k range before I pull the trigger?

Weight is not an issue.
would prefer as compact as possible.
34mm tube since I already have a badger mount sitting there.
2k and under (couple 100 over is fine)
15-18x
Tree reticle a must since I don’t plan on dialing much.

Thanks in advance
