‘Entry level’ chassis

Looking to dip my toes into the bolt gun world, from the world of ARs.

The pragmatist in me knows that the Seekins and MPA turn key guns are the best value(s) under $3k.

The eternal tinkerer in me knows I won’t be happy with a factory gun as configured. With a hard $1250 cap on a chassis, is there anything better than an MDT ACC Premier Gen 2 or an MPA BA ESR?

The intent is to configure the rifle (minus glass and mount) for $3k, so I think that budget for a chassis still allows for a higher end barrel, trigger, and muzzle device.

action help

i'm trying to find out what's required to use a longer cartridge in a long action receiver for 3.850" mags. from some understanding the bolt stop needs to be changed to accommodate for a 4"+ oal. does the port need to be opened up also? then there's the bottom medal and stock fitment for the change or just a chassis or stock that accepts said length(s). so far i'm just looking at bolt faces of .590" and maybe larger diameter wise in .640 or .810" range. not specific on which cartridge will be used for now?

Gas Block Problem

Put together a new .308 gas gun a few weeks ago and I'm having a hell of a time getting the gas system running. Thought I'd see if anyone here has faced a similar issue. The components are as follows:

LaRue 16" Midlength Barrel
Superlative Arms Adjustable Gas Block
Melonited Mid-Length Gas Tube

I've assembled a lot of gas guns over the years and have never had this much trouble with a gas system. I installed everything and test fired only to seemingly get no gas to the bolt. So, I disassembled and the reassembled with the same result. I'm wondering if it is an issue with the gas block or gas tube. I have a new gas tube coming to see if that fixes things. I used the spaghetti trick to make sure the gas hole is lined up with the gas block.

This is the first time I've tried a SA adjustable block, so I'm not sure if there is a defect with the gas block. I set it up per the instructions, but I don't know if I might also be doing something wrong. I guess I can replace the gas block with a standard one as well to make sure it's not a barrel or bolt issue.

Anyone have suggestions or other obvious things I might be missing?

5.56x45 muzzle device questions

Quick Version
I currently use a birdcage type flash hider (came with the gun). It is not an A2 and has an open bottom. It's open all the way around except for the tines.

I'd like to try the benefit of a comp or brake. Do I want something like the WarComp Closed-Tine with the ports in the top that keeps the flash-hider function, or do I want a comp with more holes on the top, or do I want more of a muzzle brake device like the Surefire SOCOM muzzle brake?

More detail
I don't have actual experience with muzzle devices other than a birdcage flash hider. Before I go on a muzzle-device safari and build a costly collection of them in a drawer, I'd like to get feedback on the experience of others with 5.56x45 in particular. Because 556 doesn't have a lot of recoil, I anticipate the effects brakes to be subtler but there is still plenty of gas to drive a comp or brake.

I understand there are flash suppressors that cut bright muzzle flash. There are compensators that blow gas up to push the muzzle down, counteracting muzzle rise. And there are muzzle brakes that blow gas to the sides or back to either reduce the gas pushing the rifle backward or possibly even pull the rifle forward against recoil generated when the bullet and powder mass is ejected.

Flash hiders reduce flash that can interfere with the sight picture and cause a more visible signature. Flash isn't desirable, but it isn't an issue in daylight, competition, recreational shooting or most situations where one isn't anticipating return fire.

Compensators should tame muzzle rise. While 556 doesn't generate a lot of recoil, the sight picture is affected. If any magnification is used in the optic, the movement is also magnified. Even slight muzzle movement also requires time for the muzzle to return on target which would increase split times in competition. I imagine that lateral movement compensated by compensators is more disturbing to sight picture than the longitudinal movement straight-back that brakes attenuate.

Muzzle brakes primarily keep the gas ejected from the muzzle from pushing the rifle backward, instead directing it out to the sides. This is understood to be particularly annoying to people adjacent to the shooter's position. While this straight-back gas thrust portion of recoil itself should not disturb sight picture, it is inevitably directed into the shooter who himself does not recoil straight back but bends in his soft tissue and at joints resulting in angular and lateral movement.

I understand that some people find comps and brakes bothersome because of the blast that can be directed toward the shooter. Other people note that the blast is less often directed backward, but more to the sides. There are some brakes that actually direct gas backward. The brakes that direct gas to the sides are more problematic when there are reflective surfaces in those directions.

I also understand there are suppressors, and a lot of muzzle devices are suppressor attachment points.

I currently use a birdcage type flash hider (came with the gun). It is not an A2 and has an open bottom. It's open all the way around except for the tines. My use is for training and civic duty. I have better options for home defense.

Tony Ben and his work on my M1A...

I feel like good work and good gunsmithing doesn't get enough attention... its a bit of a read....

Bottom line up front, get a hold of https://tonybenm14.com/ if you need work on your M1A!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would like to give a shout out to Tony Ben... Not only for his You tube channel but also his shop he just opened.
Years ago I started watching his channel. Part by part I ordered everything for a M1A. Started with a LRB M21 receiver. Lothar Walther barrel (Krieger was out of stock)... War Fighter gas system. NM trigger... etc.... I wanted the m21 stock from Springfield, but they were discontinued before I could order one. Then I wanted a J Allen.... no where to be found. I settled on a archangel stock.. put it in the mill, opened it up to fit the rear lug of the LRB arms.. Bedded it with devcon.... and it just wouldn't shoot accurately (3-4 inch groups no matter what I fed it).
I end up getting frustrated and let it sit a round for about a month and then I saw he opened up his shop. I called and picked his brain... I decided to order a McMillan and when it came in I would send it to him... A deployment later and the stock is at the house, I box it up and send it to him.
I asked him to bed the rifle and look it over to make sure I didn't mess anything up. After all this was the first chamber I have ever cut with a pul through. Sometime later he gets to it, step by step he's telling me what he finds, gets the bedding done. Test fires it and it shot well under 1 Inch at 100 yards .... He boxed it up and sent it home to me.
Yesterday I took it to the range to do load development on it... Everything was under 1 inch at 100 yards. The best group with 175 grain SMK was just over 0.6 inches at 100...
I cannot give enough compliments to him. A true professional and craftsman. I know I can be a bit particular, and some times tough to deal with. I am extremely inquisitive. He was beyond patient and professional.
10/10 would recommend to anyone wanting bolt gun accuracy out of a M1A.
(And yes I know I can go one step lower on rings, they are on the way)

Spotters Leupold Mark 4 20-60x80 Mounting Question

Gentlemen, I have used a Leupold Mark 4 12-40 for years now and have also been using the KDG Optics case with it. I am in the market for the larger Mark 4 20-60 and I am curious about the mounting bar on the bottom.

Since I don't own the larger 20-60 I am wondering if anyone here that has one can measure the height of the spotter, from the base plate that looks like a rail to the top of the spotter. The KDG case has to slide in and from pictures online it looks like the 20-60 has a larger height than the 12-40 due to the rail looking bar on the bottom. They are both using the same housing and I called Leupold to ask them and they didn't have the measurements.

Also, is the rail mounting plate on the 20-60 removable and does it have to be used, or can I just take it off and slide the KDG case onto it and mount it like the smaller 12-40.

Any help and pictures appreciated. Thanks
