Gunsmithing How to strip coating inside action?

I have a bighorn action that was coated by the gunsmith years ago. I don’t remember what kind of coating it was but it’s starting to make the bolt sticky. I’m wondering what the best way to strip it is? The coating is pretty durable, the outside of the action still looks great after all these years of use.

Was thinking some kind of media blaster, if that’s the route what type of media should I use?

Chances are you are going to compromise the overall coating by stripping the inside. The edges of the rest of the action will be exposed.

That said, if its coming off then chances are its at a point where its vulnerable to the ultra-dangerous paint strippper type products. The gel paint murder shit.

Stuff is so dangerous that even a fleck on your body burns like fire. Wear a face shield and animal husbandry gloves if you use that shit. Tyvek suit....or a left over moon landing suit you can sacrifice as the paint stripper melts it like a scene from Aliens.

Good info. Really don’t care if the finish gets ruined. I ordered a new action but would like to get this one smoother out as a back up or loaner.

Brass brush will take about any coating off without hurting the metal underneath. That's what I use to clean carbon off my brakes and have stripped a couple of my suppressors for refinishing.

Send it to get DLC coated.

They will blast it to prepare for DLC anyway

The only way to remove Cerakote or GunKote is blasting, mask off the exterior of the receiver well and double up along the edges.
With a narrow aperture nozzle on the gun you might be surprised how well you can control what gets blasted and what doesn't.

Anyone that does Cerakote has had to re-do/blast clean parts for another go.
I would blast it clean, and then coat with Micro-Slick.

Aircraft paint stripper gel is "paint murder shit." If any chemical stripper will do it that's it. If that doesn't work the only hope is abrasive blasting.

I contacted cerakote about alternatives to blasting and was told chemical strippers won’t work. Need some type of abrasive where using sand paper or blasting basically

Fill your action up with toothpaste and a little dirt. Cycle it about 5000 times see if it slicks right back up lol.

aircraft remover WILL remove cerakote as well as any other powdercoating, hit up your local auto paint supply store

I work with caustic, acids, and cyanide for my day job, so why not add some bad ass chemicals to the home life haha. I should have all the proper PPE but will check out the SDS to verify.
