Long story short a bought a Ares btr 10×40×56 for a light caliber benchrest scope on a budget. When I receive it from Midway it was almost solid black looking down the tube. Nothing would fix the problem. Call Athlon today after hearing good things about them. Well all I got was the scope is fine you just don't know how to set a scope up...... rings are too tight ect. The scope was mounted to their specs. So I guess I got a new paper weight.
 
If you’ve mounted it improperly and are trying to look through it at 40x power you may see nothing but black as your eye has to be positioned behind it just right.

Set it lowest 10x power and try to center your eye behind the scope about 2” from the end. Move closer or further, slightly left or right, until you can see the full circular picture through the scope without any side shadows. Once you’ve successfully done this increase the power and recenter your circular image. You will find your eye position becomes more critical as you increase the power.
 
I sent one back a month or so ago, but I had pretty well narrowed down that the scope had problems. Got it replaced promptly no questions asked.
 
I've moved up to 3 of them now (2 chinese, 1 japanese). Have had zero issue with their response turnaround. I've ran into inappropriately placed phone persons at many companies over the years. I'd follow the advice above given previous experience (form + return) but if you call them back I wouldn't let him get off the phone until you have a picture through the scope or a plan of attack. ;) I might also ask to speak to a supervisor.
