I know someone who has a ranch in central Texas thats overrun with hogs. He held a wedding for one of his sons on the bank of the Pedernales River that cuts through complete with a wedding arch.
I drove down there afterwards on what once a mowed lane and the hogs had dug up the bank so bad my ATV could barely get over it and almost turned over in deep holes. The arbor and the area where it once stood had caved off into the river and was gone.

if the hogs were actually a real problem, then all land owners wouldnt be charging people to hunt them.....

A couple things since I have lived this nightmare: first there are trappers who won’t shoot your calves. Second, you can’t shoot enough of them to arrest the growth. And last is the suckiest part: they are intelligent and will move out under pressure, only to come back. It’s a freaking game of whack-a-mole. They get trap-wise, learn human patterns and breed like rabbits. Leasing land has little effect by and large. Around here there was an attempt by the state gov to thin them out using helos. The only thing really accomplished were horses and cattle run through fences.

ok, so what you are saying is basically only solution is to hire trappers.
seems to my backward ass though, that shooting as many as possible may not eradicate them, but a dead hog is a dead hog and immediately ceases to breed and destroy land. if it were truly as devastating as people make out, then every little bit would help I would think.

2 years ago I went to Texas for my sisters wedding, while there for 2 weeks I called nearly 100 ranches and EVERY ONE had a price list on hand ranging from 500 a night to 3k per night. that tells me the land owners dont really see this as that big of a problem.
sitting in a diner one morning 3 days before I had to head home, I overheard 2 ranchers complaining about how bad the hogs were on their place, I turned around and asked them if they let people shoot them, and both said yes for x dollars a day.
now, im just a simple redneck from Wyoming, but that tells me money is more important than the hogs problem is to Texas ranchers.

I guess now is not the time to tell you guys that I have 2 farmers that pay me to shoot hogs on their places.
You have people willing to pay you to kill the things tearing up your property....they are willing to pay you, it’s pretty much free money. Just because it’s tearing up land doesn’t mean it’s always mean it’s ruining your livelihood it’s just becoming another opportunity in a lot of cases
I’ve spoken to game wardens, state trappers, and biologists around here, and everyone seems to agree the only way to get a handle on the hog population is poisoning, and you’re just gonna have to accept some game bi-kill, but they also agree that as long as people are charging and paying, they’ll never get it handled.
Texas doesn't really have much state land or federal land. Mostly private. Have to go further west to get more public land.
When it get really bad I know a few guys you can call....We don't really have ammo issues either.
I have 9-10 properties that I shoot hogs on for free...although I'm in OK and not TX. Never had a landowner want money, but I have talked to a couple that wanted to shoot the hogs themselves and therefore weren't interested in my services.
My policy towards property owners that want money is the same as my foreign policy outlook...fuck 'em. Not only fuck 'em, but when you're in over your head and you want my help I'm now too busy.
The problem with many TX landowners is that there are literally hundreds of thousands of "sportsmen" in TX who throw money at anything and everything. Think that there isn't a lot of door knocking and proposition for access? One place I hunt is actually owned by a Dallas lawyer. He showed me photos a year ago of three of his buddies who paid $15K/ea to "hunt" huge non-typical whitetails on a high-fenced property.
I'm not giving landowners a pass (see foreign policy above), but by the 3rd or 4th time some guy in a $90K truck pulls up and offers you a $grand for one night of shooting pigs on your place, you'd probably look at it as an income source too.
They may also look at the money as a way to offset the cost of the calves and equipment that will inevitably get shot with that many inexperienced assholes running around with thermals. All money, no skill or common sense.

There is certainly a group that happens to have an abundance of hogs that have become an income stream for them. I think they have no desire to "solve" the problem and create a problem for neighbors who do want to.

I wouldn't mind paying a reasonable fee to hunt and shoot hogs, but as has been noted above, the prices are obnoxiously high. I laugh at the cocksuckers that complain about hogs, yet want to charge 300 a gun, plus kill fee, plus a mandatory cleaning fee etc...
I read an article, years ago, from around San Antonio. Guy was trapping hogs for a customer, getting paid by said customer to trap the hogs and remove them. He asked said customer if he could bring his son to shoot a few (it's not hunting in Texas, it's baiting and shooting the one you want), you guessed it, Landowner wanted him to pay. He said fuck it, keep paying me to trap them.

I can go to HEB and buy a WHOLE lot of pork, already butchered, for 300 bucks. And, it tastes better. Feral hogs in South Texas don't taste that great, they eat some nasty shit and there are no decent crops for them.

Wild pigs have always been a problem to farmers here in CA. I don't care for machine guns, but wouldn't mind doing pest control from a helicopter with a rifle or shotgun.
Then shoot the coyotes off of the carcasses.
