New to the world of NV. I grabbed a pvs-30 recently to start playing at night. I noticed when the moon was straight overhead the targets got almost shadowed in the optic and made it very hard to see good detail shooting. Without grabbing a Wilcox Raptar so I can leave my Vortex Impact, what IR illuminator do you recommend. Some hunting, a lot of LR shooting.

I’m in a similar boat. I’m going to be getting a PVS27. How far are you wanting to shoot and what caliber? I’ve read the Luna is good, but probably wouldn’t stand up to the recoil of the 338 I planned on using it with. I’m going with a Dbal D2 mounted above the scope on a board most likely

my range goes to 900 so would be nice to have full use of it. 6.5 creed and 308 would be the largest caliber I use it with .

That’s exactly what I’m hoping to accomplish so I’m very interested as to what others say. I’ve read that the Kiji maxes out at about 400 yards. I’ve read the Dbal D2 is good to 750-800 yards. Any further will require one of the full power laser IR devices I think.

I have been going through this now for several months. My best friend and I hunt and shoot together a lot. He has a EOtech Clip-NV and I have a PVS-27. We have tried a bunch of illumination devices. Right now he is running a full power PEQ-15 and I have a Luna without the filter. Although the Luna is a bit janky, for the money it is really good. I love the fact that is has variable power output and beam divergence. Having too much illumination is often a bad thing. A lot of times a wide beam on lower power is what’s needed to locate and identify a target. The Luna is darn good and will illuminate targets 800+. For the money, I won’t be switching anytime soon. Buy the adapter for the Surefire tailcap, remove the filter and go shoot.

I’m really considering grabbing a Snipers hog light Hyperion 50 and adding it to a wicked lights gen 4 mount. This should get me to 1k and if I go to a dedicated IR laser/illuminator I can always find good use for it with NV. Not sure yet
I really like those snip.hog IR flashlights, they flatass pump out the IR downrange with their bigger diode heads models. The smaller head units work great for hunting under 500 yrd. . I use one of the 38-lxr all the time out at night. Their tail-cap power adjustment is nice to fine tune on the night conditions, and uses the common 18650 batteries.

I’m looking at the new Hyperion models with the Turbo head. It says that the 50 model has 1000m range with the IR 850nm head. That would be possible to rifle mount for hunting or stand alone on my tripod for night time illumination hunting. And yeah I like the Flood to tight beam adjustment and power level dial on the tail cap. That’s very convenient.

I use a DBAL-D2 and TNVC Torch

Says the Torch was replaced with the new Zbolt heads and honestly that looks Very interesting for LR rifle mounted light. Shows a 2500m model coming out 1st to 2nd quarter of this year. Thank you

Have used Luna, DBAL D2, TNVC Torch, mil
Issue PEQ15, mil issue NGAL, and recent Somogear peq 15. Heck even an old giant light force spotlight with an IR cap on it. Luna has hands down been best with filter removed. Using SIMRAD and Luna with 50% illum one night could count antlers on a buck at 1200m. Mount is garbage, constantly need to push/adjust Luna to point where you want it, but man does it light things up and can tweak power/beam diameter for best possible image. For the price it’s a no brainer.
