I had been wanting a lever action rifle because...lever actions are cool. Lusted after the new S&W 1854 in 44 Mag. but the 44 isnt that great of long range cartridge.

And I'd been wanting aa .22 because...affordable (unless you get really serious), but I hate the cheaper new Savage's and Ruger's, mostly short barrels and the mags are expensive, cheezy, and dont last well...in my experience.

So I was a bit stumped, and then I stumbled across the:

Marlin 39 A, lever action .22 caliber. 24" barrel and great holy moly no mag, reliably tube fed. Made in 1941 in what I'd call overall good condition. Small spot of rust on the receiver but other than that good to very good. I got a deal because everybody was afraid of the rust. May just be an abrasion or somebody tried to sand it. Dosent concern me, for me this isnt a collector, its a shooter. The funny looking line in front of the receiver is really a finely fitted machine work, just shows up bad in the photo, maybe the flash. Range day tomorrow.

If you know anything about these, wisdom welcomed.

The first firearm I bought was a new 39A at local place back in 1978. Really nice rifle with a horrible trigger. Expect your will be superb ❤️
The trigger is not bad at all, a bit heavy but breaks clean and no travel. I'm hopping to get to the range.

Odd, I've got rifles and pistols that cast a LOT more than this, but they dont have the aura. This thing was born about the time the Japs bombed Pearl Harbor. It's eight years older than I am.

I was almost going to make the joke that it is pre-historic. Almost.

That is a sweet looking rifle. And one day, I plan to try and visit your neck of the woods. Just not yet.

    Any advice on ammo?

The rifle I always wanted and will never have. My understanding is that it is the Squirrel Rifle of Perfection. Anything accurate to take tree rats out of trees with more than fair regularity, is very, very good.

Yes we still do have at least one lever action in the house. A JM Marlin branded 1894 in .44. It’s a certified deer killer. Cute as a bug, deadly as a rattler.

Never have? They are cheaper than a tier2 scope.

Get one! They are awesome! And cheap (by SH standards)

Yep, my 39A went down the road ( yeah stupid move). Currently have something different, not better l, but different. We all need to have have one. Again, that is a Kick Ass find to be used and passed down.

It’s not the money, it’s our age. I have a gunsafe full of rifles and handguns, a gun cabinet also full. All the rifles and single shot handguns (XP100’s and Anschutz 64P) are right handed. Our son and only heir is left handed. While there are some he wants, quite a few really need to leave. Acquiring more, just isn’t in the plan, got no place for them and I’ll never have the time left to shoot them. Lost our access to the hunting lease (the owner died and another purchased it) so not much hunting left.

I know the feeling. I'm 75, no family, no kids, no nothing. Fuckit, I'm just going to enjoy this one.

When I read this post the other day I thought oh I know where one of those are at and I must own it! I asked my 81 year old friend yesterday if I could buy it and his answer was… “that is one of the ones I gave to my grandson” So sad I really thought I had a chance. This is one of dozens of firearms that one of the two grandsons ended up with just recently. I know that’s the way it works but they’re both unappreciative little shits who have no clue what they keep getting. I’m not blood but see, speak and basically take care of him almost every day. I am the son he never had, two daughters my age. It stings a little but in the end I’m just thankful he’s in my life so it’s all good. Was really hopeful on this one though lol.
