I think it was 1999 or 2000 that India and Pakistan got very sporty on the border area.

I remember one of the Pak generals saying "Mind your own business. If we use nukes, that's our business."

Was pretty sure that they were going to lob a few at each other that time. Cooler heads prevailed, but they shot the shit out of each other. But at the time, Pakistan was also trying to cozy up to the West for economic reasons. And 9/11 turned them into a 'firm' ally for a while and poured money into them.

The big attack on the Indian Hotel was clearly done by Pakistan ISI. The Indians were listening on their phone calls! In real time! And India didn't blow the shit out of the Paks... But their SF did a hell of job killing the terrorists.

Right now India has a lot more military power and a lot more to lose economically. Pak is now suffering because Afghanistan is over and they don't have anything we want. Plus bad memories of an ISI that almost certainly knew where Bin Laden was for a long time. So we don't like them very much. While India is getting ready to take over from China in a number of ways economically.

Pakistan, in short, has little to lose. Needs a nice war to get its people all riled up and support the gummint. And Grabbing parts of Kashmiir or similar areas would be good for them.

So we'll see what happens this time. Pak is in a whole different place right now... and may think they have nothing to lose!

Realistically, the British left behind 'fewer' messes than the French and, especially, the Belgians. The German colonies were trained pretty well.
