Rifle Scopes Which zoom setting that you use?

Re: Which zoom setting that you use?

Unless you shelled out for a decent FFP, typical optics lose mil dot value when you increase magnification.

However, i notice that once i get to about 20x, i start noticing the side to side shake from blood pulsing through my cheeks.

I'm a fixed 10x kinda guy.

Re: Which zoom setting that you use?

Not all the time no.....

Range, environment, more than one target, speed etc.. may change my setting

On paper probably, hunting probably not

It's a view, but I am sure there are people with more experience than me who will have views

Re: Which zoom setting that you use?

Well...the purpose of a variable power scope is just that...variability. I don't buy variable scopes that don't get used throughout their range of magnification depending on the conditions I'm shooting in, ranges and targets (or game) I'm shooting at, how bad mirage is running, etc., etc., etc.

I have a couple fixed 10x scopes as well as fixed 2.5x to 2.75x scopes and numerous variable scopes ranging from max power settings of 4x up to 25x, all of which are mounted on rifles/carbines with very different purposes in mind. Let the kind of shooting you will be doing (as well as your eyesight) dictate what magnification range (if any) is best for you.

Sure, don't you????? I mean what the point of having anything, if you don't use it's capability.

Re: Which zoom setting that you use?

I use the variable on my hunting scope throughout the range, as the situation dictates. Just put an inexpensive mil-dot on my .22 and usually use it on 10x, will use the higher mags to see my holes @ 100yds.

Re: Which zoom setting that you use?

I find that the better I develop my skills, the less magnification I need and prefer. I have been using around 8x lately at 230 yards, shooting 2" targets. I find that when I crank the magnification way up, I notice the reticle moving (an amount of movement that is imperceptible at lower magnification) which increases stress and my flinch.

I do like being able to dial up to 25x to look at my holes in my target though (Schmidt and Bender 5-25x56.) To be fair, I haven't had an opportunity to shoot past 230 yet, I might prefer more mag as the distance grows.

Re: Which zoom setting that you use?

I use variables just so i can adjust the magnification to the situation. When hunting i generally leave my scopes on the minimum magnification just in case some thing pops up close when punching paper it all depends on range and conditions.

Re: Which zoom setting that you use?

Variable power optics = Adjustable to your situation ... go figure ...

Do I have all day to take the shot ... CRANK

Do I have to shoot quick, a mover, Dial Down ...

Why I love my SN3's 3.2-17 and 3.8-22 ... what more could you want! Scanning hillside for P-Dogs at approx 400 yards (on 12-15x) Find a little bastard squatin next to a sage bush ... Dial to 22 ... Boom ... Splat ... rinse ... repeat

Re: Which zoom setting that you use?

I've got a Nightforce nxs 3.5- 15
15x when out in the open, when going through thick scrub down to 3.5x I crank the scope when terrain dictates. 95% of the time it will sit on 15x

Re: Which zoom setting that you use?

Depends what you're shooting.

Paper/steel on the range? Why not go as high as you can? Otherwise why buy a scope with high mag?

Hunting? As the environment/game/distance and possibly threat demands.

Operational? I'll leave that to the experts to advise but I'd imagine much the same as hunting.......

Re: Which zoom setting that you use?

On the bench i use 22x mag
Standing supported i use 5.5x mag or lower if available
Hunting i use lowest mag available
Long range hunting, given I have ample time for shot I will use whatever mag I feel best. If i have a spotter I can use higher mag, however If not I will use lower mag just to keep sight picture a little easier.

I must be rather shitty in that case, a conclusion that might not be all that off the mark,

I shot sitting/prone at max 10/16 or even 25x, kneeling 12-20x, standing 8-12x or at times more than that.

I like to see how badly I shake/ heart beat, I still fire relaxed and when I am in the target/vitals zone
