I'm sure this has been talked about in the past at some point but I've been think thinking about it a lot lately.

Why are high BC bullets only available in a few select calibers? You would think that in this day and age of competitive shooting sports, shooting enthusiast, target shooting, gun nuts, bullet technology, ect, ect. That major bullet manufacturers would just go ahead and offer their most popular target bullets in all calibers that make sense. Regardless of what most common factory barrel twists are.

I always thought that the .270 was the perfect candidate for heavy, high BC bullets. The .270wsm could be stellar! (I thought). Now it seems that is starting to come to life with the matrix bullets. How long till we see a 170gn Berger VLD?

Moving on to my current train of thought...... .25 cal
There would be a sea of awesome possibilities if there were 130grn or 135grn high BC quarter bores. I'm no ballistician but I would think you could push 130's out of a .308 size case and easily get around 3000fps. I'd be like having a 6.5x284 with less powder and more barrel life.

maybe I'm just crazy, but seems like it would be the best of both the 6mm and 6.5mm in one package. A .25wssm could be a real treat? 25-06 fans should be happy. a modern efficient case like the 6.5 creedmoor necked down would be choice......

just thinking out loud here, sorry for the rant

Re: thoughts on the quarter bore?

Well, with nobody making factory offerings in anything other than 1:10 twist....there you have it. It is even hard to find a custom barrel in anything other that 1:10.

I did find that Pac Nor offers a 1:8 twist. I had them make one in 25-06 for an old browning action I had. I shoot resized 140gr Amaxs out of it and it performs really well.

I have found that it shoot 115gr TSXs really well too.

Lance, at least I think youre Lance, I agree. I love the 25s and am quite a 270 fan too and the bullet selection could be quite a bit better.....

Well, see, that ain't gonna happen. Nobody is going to invest in the tooling required for new bullets when there aren't any rifles out there that can shoot them.

If, on the other hand, a rifle maker started barreling in 1:9 twist (which is still terric for the 100-115 grain offerings), you might see some bullet makers step up wit some 120-130 grain bullets. Then maybe another rifle maker could jump out with a 1:8 twist and you would start to see some more 130-140 grain offerings.

Exactly This.

I've been asking Berger for just that for the past 4 years....... still waiting......

Re: thoughts on the quarter bore?

This is something I've been working on.

The ".25 Quarter Boar-Tactical" is meant to bridge the gap between the BR length cases and 6.5x47/6XC length cases.

With the max overall length of 2.25", the 25 QBT fits inside a modified AR-15 magazine. I'm hoping to get a custom .25 QBT AR built in the next few years.

This will use a lot less powder than a .308 length cartridge, but will be able to push 115 grain bullets faster than the 6mmBR can. Or that's the plan at least.

Should be hell on small game, deer, hogs, etc.

Re: thoughts on the quarter bore?

How many factory .25 caliber cartridges are there?
How many 6mm?
6.5?

There is nothing a .25 can do that a 6mm or 6.5mm can't do better. The .25 is the answer to a problem that doesn't exist.

My personal opinion

If the .25 cal bullets were around first, would there be much use for the 6mm and 6.5mm's? I figure a .25 could be made just about as light as a light 6mm and just about as heavy as a 6.5mm can be. +/- a few grains. Again I am no expert, I could be out of line here but that is just what swirls around in my brain.

Re: thoughts on the quarter bore?

I was thinking the same thing the other day. I have a 250 savage ackley that is just great. Thought about trying some 110 accubonds.
