I have a Leupold VX3 6.5-20x40 now with the varmint hunters reticle. I was thinking about sending it in the the Leupold custom shop to upgrade the knob to M1's and get the TMR reticle. this would be around $300. Is it worthwhile? Or should I just buy a new scope? I was thinking a SS HD 5-20x50 or a HDMR 3-21x50. Any advice is appreciated.

Don't spend $300 to make that scope something it's not. It's a good scope, but you're money ahead to just sell it and get the scope designed for what you want. Also with either of the scopes you mentioned you will get mil/mil which is important for most.

I would go with the SS HD 5-20, but the HDMR is a nice scope too.

Thanks for the input. What do you think I could get for it? To bad I have been lurking here and not posting or I would list it here (need more posts!). Its been a good scope out to 1000y, but I really think I might enjoy a nicer scope. I am kind of tired of eating cash on upgrades...

Re: Upgrade Leupold or get new optic?

I just went through this. I had a VX11 6-18x40 come on a rifle I acquired. The scope has sat around for years. I just got a 7mm mag that I want to set up for hunting. I wanted TMR and M1's, but with this scope, I did not feel it was worth the extra cash. I just put the M1's on it. I am very happy so far and I am OK with Kentucky windage, if I need to use hold over.

That being said, I was not familiar with this trade in deal with SWFA and my scope is worth less than yours. That seems like a solid offer, if I had the money, and was you, I would jump on it.

If you don't want to spend more money and still want a good scope, just put the M1's. Most shooters I shoot with don't ever use ranging ridicules anyway. It is easy for me to say because I have other rifles to turn to for training. Just depends on your situation. Good luck.
