6x47Lapua with 105s. H4350 or Re 17?

Re: 6x47Lapua with 105s. H4350 or Re 17?

Both powders you mention are excellent choices, and should give you stellar results. I'm currently using H4350, but have a jug of RL17 to try out soon. You may get better velocity out of RL-17, but it is probably more sensitive to temperature variations (hot-cold). Welcome to the Hide. The Snipers Hide search engine (ie type in 6x47 Lapua) is located on the right side of the page towards the bottom.

Re: 6x47Lapua with 105s. H4350 or Re 17?

I ran 107gr Sierras and 105gr Scenars. I tried both powders and felt that RL17 was not as consistent as H4350. I shot the barrel out with H4350 and if I were to go back to the 6x47 I would try hard to make H4350 work. I got more fps with RL 17 just not the consistency. Hope this helps you some.

Re: 6x47Lapua with 105s. H4350 or Re 17?

With 40gr of H4350, BR2, 107SMK my Broughton 26" run 3040 tops. Swapping RL17 and everything else the same velocity jumped 120fps with a bit of room to go. RL17 is at least 'as accurate' and overall probably a bit better group wise.

Now in my 6.5x47 with an Oby 9.1 twist @ 28" I can get 3104fps but groups aren't really impressive at 100 nor 600yds. H4350 only run about 2940fps but I think accuracy was/is more consistent. Have to retry H4350 and RL15 to get me a load I can live with both ways.

Re: 6x47Lapua with 105s. H4350 or Re 17?

Has anyone that has used R17 for a while noticed any changes in pressure from lots of powder from say 3 years ago vs. today? The other question would be if any of you shooting the 6X47 or 6.5X47 have tried IMR4350 instead of H4350? If so, what did you find...less accuracy, less velocity?

I have, recent ' as in the last year' lots of RL 17 have been pretty consistent and not as temp sensitive as when first released. I don't shoot in 6x47 but 6XC's I have been tracking this year over chrono and from 48-87 degrees seeing a 23fps swing over those temps. I will know what it does at 100f here pretty soon. I get super accuracy with it and can clock over 3000 in either a 24" Krieger or 26" Bartlein both 7.5 twist using 115
DTAC's with absolutely no pressure signs.
I have used h4350 accuracy is on par with the RL17 but down 100 fps and run into pressure around 2900 in my rifles.

Re: 6x47Lapua with 105s. H4350 or Re 17?

Thanks Mark...I had an early lot of R17 from when it was first introduced that gave me really sharp pressure curves once a certain point was reached. This was a custom 300 WSM in a Remington action. I was concerned with the case capacity of the smaller 6mm calibers that this would be magnified. It has scared me away from using it with anything else, and I use a lot of Alliant powders for other calibers.

A friend in Montana just had a 6.5X47 built on a BAT action that we shot this past weekend using H4350 and the discussion of R17 came up, so I was glad to see this topic on the site. Thanks again

Re: 6x47Lapua with 105s. H4350 or Re 17?

I'm running 39.0 of H4350 and 115gr. Berger's and in a 5R, 1-7.5 twist barrel with a 30" finish I'm getting 3030fps avg. SD is in low single digits with velocity spreads as well under 10fps. No pressure problems. Have run 40.0 but my spreads and groups got bigger.
