I'm looking to build an AR upper in 5.56/.223, any good literature out there worth picking up? Ya, I can just go to Amazon and look but I was curious if there is one book that rises above the rest. I would of posted this in 'Gunsmithing' but that looks like it's all bolt gun stuff. Any ways, I figured I'd give it a shot. Thanks in advance.

Re: First AR build...

Here is a site that can get you started. It has a lot of instructional videos. It's not the best but it's a place to start.

http://www.ar15builder.com/

I will have to check and see if I can compress and send my gunsmith DVD file through email. Send me a pm with your email address so I can attempt to send the video I used when I first started building ar's. It walks you though step by step.

Re: First AR build...

Building an AR-15 isn't rocket science, but there is a wrong way to do it. I would suggest you watch youtube videos and get yourself acquainted with the terminology of the parts. There are over 500+ books on how to build an AR-15. All in all, you don't need them! Just watch videos and save your book money for parts.

+1...and Brownells has good videos too. Ar15.com also has instructions.

Re: First AR build...

Try finding a copy of "The AR-15 Complete Asembly Guide" by Walt Kuleck...and a Army Maintenance Manual....always good to have some hard copy to refer to alongside all those new-fangled vids and You Tube things

Most manufacturers will include info on how to correctly install the bits you buy from them....or at least should have them on their websites or a support line for help/advice.

Re: First AR build...

I used the Brownell's videos & the printable guide from ar15.com. Mostly used the guide, but videos were a great help when I thought I had taken a misstep.
